Jazz rookies a fun bunch

  Every time Robert Whaley gets on a bus, Jerry Sloan asks him: ''Got your
wallet?''

  每次Whaley要搭上球隊巴士的時候，史龍都會問他：「錢包拿了嗎？」

  Yes, a month later, Whaley is still taking grief for the rookie mistake he
made back in New Jersey, when the Jazz's bus headed for the airport but had
to turn around after about a mile and go back because Whaley left his wallet
in his hotel room.

  都已經過了一個月了，Whaley還在為他犯的錯誤付出代價。上次在紐澤西，當球隊巴
士已經開往機場時，卻不得不掉頭開回飯店─因為Whaley把他的錢包忘在那兒了。

  The rookie was so petrified about angering his coaches, he didn't speak up.
Greg Ostertag, when he saw Whaley stressed out and found out why, had to let
the coaches know that Whaley needed to go back.

  這位菜鳥深怕觸怒他的教練，因此他什麼都沒說。而當TAG發現Whaley很緊張並知道發
生啥事時，TAG覺得他有責任讓他的教練了解為何Whaley必須要拿回他的錢包。

  ''He wasn't going to say anything,'' Ostertag said. ''I don't know how he
thought he was going to get it back.''

  「他那時啥都不想說」TAG說：「我甚至不知道他為何得把錢包拿回來。」

  There was no punishment, no laps to run, but the rookie is still paying for
his mistake.

  Whaley並沒有受到懲罰，不過這名菜鳥還是因此付出了代價。

  ''I'm still hearing about it,'' Whaley said, shaking his head and smiling.
''Every time.''

  「我到現在還是聽到這件事。」Whaley搖著他的頭微笑說：「每一次上巴士都會。」

  The Jazz's rookies are an interesting, fun bunch. There's something
refreshing, in a league full of wealthy veterans playing for paychecks, about
having three young guys around who are just thrilled to be here. Along with
C.J. Miles and Andre Owens, these guys are enjoying the Basketball Big
Adventure, getting paid to do nothing but play basketball.

  爵士的菜鳥們是一個有趣的小集團。在這個充斥著已經很有錢、卻仍為錢打拼的老鳥
的聯盟中有了一些新鮮事，三個小菜鳥戰戰兢兢的進入了這個聯盟。Whaley,C.J.Miles

  (Yes, I know there's a fourth, but Deron Williams is a rookie in name only.
He's been playing big-time basketball on a national stage for years, and he
doesn't have to worry about holding on to a job. He already carries himself
with the confidence of a veteran.)

  好啦，我知道爵士隊還有第四個菜鳥，不過D.Williams只不過是名義上的菜鳥而已，
他已經打過全國等級的大場面球賽了，還不只打了一年，所以他不用擔心如何保住他的
飯碗。他已經讓自己有著老鳥般的自信了。

  So basketball is about all these rookies do. It's amazing how much time
the young guys spend in the gym, the coaches say. When Sloan gives the Jazz
a day off, most of the veterans use the time to rest and heal. The rookies,
who have far fewer aches and pains and much more enthusiasm for just playing
ball, always show up to practice anyway. Except for the day before
Thanksgiving, when he went home to Dallas, Miles said he has practiced every
day since he arrived in Utah.

  所以打籃球是這些菜鳥們的全部，教練說：「你若是知道他們花多少時間在體育館的
話，你會嚇到的。」當史隆放隊員們一天假時，老鳥們通常都趁著時間休息並養傷。不

  Ty Corbin and Scott Layden put the rookies through workouts on the ''off''
days, which actually may be more valuable than the team's practices since
they can focus on what they need to work on individually.

  Ty Corbin和Scott Layden兩名助理教練總是在休息日陪著菜鳥們練球，菜鳥們在這
種練習中的收穫遠比定期練球來的大，因為他們可以專心增強他們自身所不足的地方。

  ''What else do I have to do?'' said Owens, who once told me he was
''married'' to the machine that collects rebounds and fires passes to him,
allowing him to practice hundreds of shots from the same spot.

  「我還需要做些什麼？」Owens說。他笑稱自己已經跟幫他撿球並傳球給他的機器結
婚了，因為這機器讓他可以在同一定點投上好幾百球。

  ''This is where I want to be, getting better.''

  And the sessions invariably end with wildly competitive games of H-O-R-S-E.
The kids tend to stick to three-pointers, because ''the coaches, they don't
have much range,'' Miles said. ''But Coach Layden, from 15 feet, he's going
to make every one.''

  這種練習通常會以一種名叫H-O-R-S-E的投籃比賽來收尾，菜鳥們通常要求在三分線
比賽。Miles說：「因為教練們的射程沒有那麼遠，不過Layden教練在15呎左右的距離
，他幾乎可以投進每一球。」
