AK comes to understanding with Sloan

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - The Jazz's game with Detroit was a little more than an
hour away, but the visitors' locker room was empty. Utah's players were all
on the Palace floor, stretching, shooting and warming up.

    It might not seem unusual, but it was. For the past several years, Andrei
Kirilenko has spent most of the time before games in the locker room, quietly
reading Russian paperbacks at his locker.

    But that will change, Kirilenko said. The six-year veteran, mired in a
seasonlong slump that has most of his statistics at career-low levels, had a
private meeting with coach Jerry Sloan and his coaching staff on Tuesday, and
both sides resolved to try to find a way to restore Kirilenko's play to its
former All-Star level.

    For Kirilenko, the chief complaint came down to the same one he had last

    "I think I could get couple of plays especially for me, just to involve.
I don't need the ball every time," Kirilenko said. "Every time I ask, it
changes for like two or three games, and every time it goes back. I don't ask

    If that's what it takes, Sloan said, he's amenable. And sure enough,
Kirilenko took three shots, all of them from in close, in the first five
minutes against the Pistons on Wednesday. He missed them all, but clearly
tried to play with more energy than he has in recent games all night.
Kirilenko finished with nine points on 4-for-9 shooting, more shots than he
has taken in all but four games this year. He also had seven rebounds, most
since Dec. 18, plus a season-high four steals.

    That's as opposed to his recent play, when he appeared to lose interest
in taking part. "Some of the games, I don't feel like I'm on the floor," said
Kirilenko, who told Sloan in the meeting that the game wasn't "fun" anymore.
"I just go back and forth, back and forth, back and forth and I go to sleep."

the Russian needs more positive reinforcement than some to stay motivated.
