  Jefferson headed to Jazz

  The Jazz reportedly completed their anticipated trade for big man
  Al Jefferson on Tuesday, sending two future first-round draft picks
  to Minnesota and absorbing Jefferson’s $13 million salary through the
  Carlos Boozer trade exception obtained last week.

  Although the Jazz had not officially announced the trade, the Associated
  Press in Minneapolis reported that the deal had been agreed upon.

  One of the picks the Jazz acquired in the February trade that sent
  Ronnie Brewer to Memphis while the other is a Jazz pick. The Memphis pick
  is top-14 protected in 2011 and is protected in future years as well.

  The trade could be the Jazz’s equivalent of the deal that sent Pau Gasol
  to the Lakers from Memphis in 2008. The Jazz were able to acquire in
  Jefferson one of the NBA’s top low-post players while giving up relatively
  little in return.

  Jefferson is owed $42 million the next three years while Gasol was owed $49
  million when he was traded. Gasol flourished after leaving the Grizzlies to
  join a contender in Los Angeles while the Jazz hope the same will be true
  for Jefferson.

  Although he averaged 20.1 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in three
  seasons in Minnesota, Jefferson hasn’t played on a team that’s won more
  than 24 games the past years, dating to his second season in Boston.

  Jefferson’s teams have gone a combined 163-329 in his six-year career,
  a winning percentage of just .331. The Jazz, however, will look to Jefferson
  as a potential replacement for Boozer and complement to Deron Williams.

  The trade does come at a price, with the Jazz pushing their payroll into
  luxury-tax territory for the second consecutive year. Jefferson, Williams,
  Mehmet Okur and Paul Millsap are owed nearly $50 million combined for the
  2011-12 seasons as well.
