Jefferson Feels Like A Rookie Again
By: Jason Fleming Last Updated: 11/13/10 6:25 PM ET
When power forward Al Jefferson was traded this past summer from the
Minnesota Timberwolves to the Utah Jazz he knew his basketball world was
about to change. Part of that change was going from a team who lost more
often than not to a team where the expectation is to win every single night,
but that wasn't all. From the coaching staff to his new teammates, Jefferson
has been excited about the move from day one.
"It's a wonderful feeling – great teammates, great coaching staff,"
Jefferson said to HOOPSWORLD. "They do everything first class here.
"I'll give you an example. I went 1-7 (Tuesday in a win in Miami), D-Will
fouled out in overtime, and we're still deep enough to pull the win out. It's
a great team. That's just how good this team can be – I've never been a part
of something like that."
Being a part of something like that, even just the idea of it before
Jefferson hit a Utah training camp, stoked a fire under him. After he knew he
was going to Utah it really made him change his outlook on things like
training and prepping for a new season.
"I knew I was coming in with a very demanding coach who expects the best out
of you, coming in with guys who are used to winning and used to being in the
playoffs…it brought me to another level for getting ready for the season.
This team isn't used to losing, they don't like losing. You lose a game and
it feels like the world is over here, and that's the type of attitude you
have to have."
That's different than the places Jefferson has played previously. Drafted out
of high school by the Boston Celtics in 2004, the big man played three years
there before going to Minnesota in the Kevin Garnett deal where he played
another three seasons. In Boston his teams averaged 34 wins, and that
includes a playoff appearance his rookie year. His three seasons in Minnesota
the team averaged just 20.3 wins a year.
Suffice it to say winning hasn't been a big part of Jefferson's NBA career to
date. The change in attitude with coming to the Jazz, where every night a win
is expected, is nice.
"It's a wonderful thing," said Jefferson. "I did things this year that I've
never done before – preparing myself, taking care of my body. I'm always in
the weight room. I'm always trying to be a professional, trying to train my
body to play at a high level at all times. I just have a different outlook on
the game.
"I feel like a rookie again, I feel like I did when I first came into the
NBA."
One of the biggest differences is with legendary coach Jerry Sloan. One of
the winningest coaches in NBA history, Sloan is in his 23rd season running
the Jazz. Playing for a bad team, Jefferson has had a few coaches trying to
keep their jobs, which will understandably change a team's approach and
preparation. In Utah everything begins and ends with Sloan, one of the most
secure coaches in the league. As a player you have to do what Coach Sloan
says and do it right; if not you'll find yourself on the bench, no matter how
many points you are capable of scoring.
"Well, I kind of had that experience with Doc Rivers in Boston," explained
Jefferson. "Doc was the same way. Even though at that time he wasn't really
winning – besides my rookie year when we went to the playoffs – Doc had
that same attitude. That kind of prepared me for Coach Sloan.
"I'll tell you, Coach Sloan's not as bad as people try to make him out to be.
I mean, don't get it twisted, he's a very tough coach. He believes in you
playing hard, he's demanding, but he'll crack a smile every now and then.
That's something I had never seen before this year.
"Really, that type of coach works well for me, because if I don't do what I'm
supposed to do, it's my fault."
Immediately after the trade Coach Sloan reached out to Jefferson, wanting to
make sure he understood the expectations that would be placed upon him as a
member of the Jazz. The coach mapped out how he wanted to use Jefferson,
telling him he would absolutely be a key part of the team's offensive and
defensive schemes. That personal touch was not lost on Jefferson.
"It was a wonderful feeling. I've always had the utmost respect for Coach
Sloan because he's an icon in this league and done a lot of wonderful things.
I remember the first time I talked to him on the phone, the things he said to
me, it was like music to my ears.
"When one of the best coaches of all time asks you to do something, expects
you to do something, you will be ready to do it. It was a no-brainer for me –
I was happy. He brought me up on the system and just really made me feel
good."
Speaking of the system, Jefferson knows it's been quite successful for a
couple of players, namely Hall of Famer Karl Malone – one of the best power
forwards in the history of the game – and Carlos Boozer, the man he is
effectively replacing after Boozer chose to go to Chicago in free agency. He
understands how the system fits him and how successful he can be.
"It's perfect. I couldn't ask for any a better system, a better situation, or
a better place to play for a better team. This was meant for me. Just because
I have love and respect for this game and I like to see good basketball I was
disappointed to see (Carlos) Boozer leave because I think they had a good
thing here, but when he left I knew that was a good opportunity for me. I
just feel that the things Boozer and D-Will did in this league the past three
or four years was amazing, and to know that I have the opportunity to do the
same – it motivates me."
Boozer
Last year point guard Deron Williams was roundly proclaimed the best point
guard in the NBA, apparently stepping ahead of the pack at the top which
includes the New Orleans Hornets' Chris Paul, the Chicago Bulls' Derrick
Rose, the Boston Celtics' Rajon Rondo, and the Phoenix Suns' Steve Nash. Now,
that player, the one named the best point guard in the league, is Jefferson's
point guard. He is not taking that for granted.
Derrick Rose、Rajon Rondo、Steve Nash
"That's something I've never had a chance to experience. I got a chance to
play with Gary Payton on his way out, played with (Rajon) Rondo when he was a
rookie, and I played with Jonny Flynn when he was a rookie. Rondo is a great
point guard and Flynn is well on his way, but to play with a point guard at
the top of his game? I've never had that opportunity since coming out of high
school. He makes my job a lot easier."
The first rule when playing with Williams? Have your hands up and be ready
for the ball at all times.
"Gotta be ready – I learned that in preseason," Jefferson said with a smile.
"Have your hands ready, catch, and go in for the score."
。」
Jefferson seems to fitting right in. Through eight games – including a
three-game stretch of wins on the road in Miami, Orlando, and last night in
Atlanta – the Jazz is 6-3 and their new center is averaging about 16 points
and 10 rebounds a night. He and Paul Millsap have played well together in the
frontcourt and when the Jazz get center Mehmet Okur back from an Achilles
tear Utah's frontcourt will be one of the deepest and most talented in the
entire league.
There was a little bit of worry when the Jazz lost Boozer this past summer,
but Al Jefferson is filling the hole just fine.
