And the Jazz are happy about that. They should be. They need him. Not so much because he can still curl off of screens and dust the net with those 17-foot jumpers, not because he's active, spinning and whirling around the offensive end, not because he rebounds, not because he's a smart player who gets what's going on in tight games, and not because of his versatility. They have to have him for another reason, one long in the making but absolutely requisite in their here and now - because of the way he was raised, and what resulted from it. If there was a credo in Harpring's family - a hardy group of five kids reared by parents Jack, who played football for Bo Schembechler at Michigan, and Maureen, who, by comparison, made Jack seem soft - it went like this: No Wimps Allowed. The Jazz have too many wimps. Once, when Harpring was in grade school, he chased one of his brothers through the house and, just when he was closing in on him, his brother slammed a glass door in his face. Harpring extended his hand to push open the obstruction and, when he did, the glass exploded, slicing open his index finger and his thumb, nearly costing him his eventual career. That accident came a few years after Harpring broke his arm when he was 4, playing a favored, time-honored family game called "Kill the Man With the Ball," and after he suffered a major cut around his eye - the scar is still there - when he was 6, as he attempted to jump a large rock while flying down a hill on his bike. The most memorable Harpring quote he ever spoke, the one that gets straight to the important point regarding who he is and what he means to the Jazz, he uttered about that hand injury suffered so long ago: "My parents were strict about keeping discipline and learning responsibility. I remember doing dishes with my hand hurt. When I put it in the water, it was stinging and oozing. Being tough was a big thing in my family because of my dad. It wasn't outrageous, but when it came to sports, you couldn't be great if you didn't have toughness in you. He learned that from his dad and from Schembechler. My dad always said, 'If you get knocked down, shake it off. If you get hit, get back up. If you're hurt, you're hurt. OK. But get back up and be hurt over on the sideline.' The worst thing you could be called in our house was a wimp. "To this day, whenever I get hurt on the court, the first thing I hear is my dad's voice saying, 'Get up, get up.' " That is precisely why the Jazz had to retain this guy. He plays basketball like a warrior. A warrior with creaky joints and a limited skill set, but a warrior, nonetheless. If Jazz fans had free tickets for every game after which Harpring was forced to soak his ankles in ice tubs and wrap his knees in ice packs, they'd all get season passes. Ironically, that was the only reason for not re-signing him - because his 30-year-old body looks like it's been run over by a road-grader. His knee has been surgically repaired multiple times. Remnants, each, physical manifestations of an attitude about how best to play the game: with energy and heart and toughness. For all their imperfections the past couple of seasons, the quality the Jazz lacked more egregiously than any other was that last one, and it's the single characteristic most profoundly mastered by Harpring. He's not the most gifted player, but if he gets knocked around, he hits back. If a situation requires that a nose be stuck into it, he sticks it in. If there's pain that needs to be ignored, he turns the other way. Karl Malone didn't give Harpring, when he first arrived in Utah, the nickname "Little Jerry" on account of him being anyone's panty-waisted wuss. He plays hard, fundamentally sound ball, and fulfills his potential through effort. His current Jazz teammates should watch and learn to blow past their own relatively weak, short thresholds. Said Sloan: "He's a tough player. He just keeps playing." And John Stockton described Harpring thusly: "He looks for ways, whatever they might be, to make us better. He just keeps battling. He's a tough competitor." Exactly what the sweet-faced Jazz so sorely need. Imagine how far Carlos Boozer, Mehmet Okur, Andrei Kirilenko, and Deron Williams might carry themselves and their team if they follow that example. Maybe, this time, they'll pay attention and get in line. gmonson@sltrib.com -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 58.62.107.199
