20 years ago this week: Malone earns weekly award, All-Star nod
Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz, who scored 61 points in a 144-96 victory over
Milwaukee over the weekend, was named NBA Player of the Week on Jan. 31,
1990.
At that time, Malone became only the 13th player in the NBA to score more
than 60 points. It was the most points scored in a regular-season game since
Michael Jordan of Chicago had 61 against Atlanta on April 16, 1987. Malone
also had 18 rebounds and three steals in the game against the Bucks.
The same day he was named Player of the Week, Malone — overlooked by the
fans for the NBA All-Star Game — was a unanimous choice of Western Conference
coaches as a reserve. It will be Malone's third All-Star appearance, and
he'll join Jazz teammate John Stockton for this year's game. Malone was the
All-Star Game's MVP last February in Houston, posting 28 points and nine
rebounds in a 143-134 West victory.
Phoenix's Tom Chambers, the ex-University of Utah forward, was also named
a Western Conference reserve for the Feb. 11 game in Miami. Chambers, the
All-Star Game's 1987 MVP, will also be making his third All-Star appearance.
