Ex-Jazz Player Teaches How to Lead By Sara White - 27 Jun 2007 Mark Eaton is still teaching people how to lead even after his career as the center for Utah Jazz has ended. Eaton spoke Wednesday at UVSC about how to lead and get breakthrough results. "I simply wasn't any good at it," said Eaton as he began to tell to tell the listeners how he went from swearing off basketball forever to becoming a NBA All-Star. Eaton said he dropped out of the basketball scene after high school because he felt it had nothing to offer him. Then one day, the assistant basketball coach for Wolverine College came by. He came by "once a week for two months," Eaton said. "He pursued me and pursued me." "Tom [the coach] had an amazing commitment to me as a leader," Eaton said. "I finally understood what I was supposed to do." Eaton told the audience of business-clad men and women that "leaders help others become great." The coach was that leader for Eaton. He helped Eaton to get signed with the Utah Jazz, and in 1982, Eaton made the move to Utah - six months later he was the starting center. When asked what advice he had for aspiring college students, Eaton said, "For me it goes back to really paying attention to who you are first because I can't help anybody unless I have found the greatness within myself." He said students need to listen to the voice inside them that is telling them where they need to go. Eaton ended by saying that the keys for facilitating leadership in others really just come down to listening. Leaders need to "pay attention to qualities in others and what makes them great," Eaton said. http://nn.byu.edu/story.cfm/64690 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 219.135.156.220
