Those who didn't 'get it'
In the aftermath of the Jazz's decision not to bring Robert Whaley back for
a second season, I spent countless minutes pouring over old media guides to
search out Utah's all-time "I-Have-The-Talent-But-I-Don't-Quite-Get-It" Team.
My nominees:
Theodore "Blue" Edwards:
With his athleticism and defensive ability, he could have been the small
forward the emerging Jazz needed for a decade. But he never quite figured
out that John Stockton and Karl Malone were the stars of the team.
Bernard King:
He might have been the most individually talented player ever in Utah.
But some ugly off-the-court issues forced the team, which was trying to
establish itself in a new market at the time, to quickly trade him.
Eric Murdock:
An outstanding college point guard, he was upset from the minute Utah
drafted him because the Jazz already had Stockton. Murdock didn't want
to learn or compete for playing time, he wanted it handed to him.
Darryl Dawkins:
When the Jazz acquired aging "Chocolate Thunder" in 1987, they thought he'd
be perfect for the role of backup to Mark Eaton. Unfortunately, Dawkins
quickly wore out his welcome, thanks to his Rodman-like hunger for the
spotlight. In fact, I remember his first practice. Twenty minutes into it,
then-assistant Jerry Sloan stopped play and yelled at Dawkins to quit talking
to his new teammates and pay attention.
Luther Wright:
A sad story, really. Given a pass through high school and college because of
his size and basketball potential, Luther was woefully lacking in the life
skills necessary to succeed in the demanding world of professional sports.
Once, just minutes before a game at Madison Square Garden, I recall Sloan
walking into the locker room and asking Luther where he had gotten the
gigantic deli sandwich he was eating. Luther explained he was hungry and had
sent one of the ball boys across the street for it. Sloan . . . well . . .
you can imagine.
Sloan ... 你自己
