Utah Jazz's Matthews in line to make team

To watch Wesley Matthews before practice Thursday was to sense nothing out of
the ordinary. He warmed up at one basket with fellow rookie Eric Maynor
before the two went through shooting drills with part-time assistant coach
Jeff Hornacek.

馬嫂一如往常地展開練習：
先是和另一名菜鳥妹惹籃下熱身，
緊接著隨助理教練老何進行投射練習。

Yet much had changed for the undrafted guard from Marquette. Matthews now is
in line to make the Jazz's opening night roster after the team decided to
release five-year NBA veteran Ronald Dupree and injured rookie Paul Harris.

不同的是馬嫂現在幾乎篤定會成為開季名單的一員，
因為Ronald Dupree與Paul Harris已被球隊宣告釋出。

"I know this game, I know I can compete at this level," Matthews said, "and
keep working hard, playing defense and focusing on getting better and helping
this team get as many wins as possible."

「我相信我有能力接受這個層級的挑戰，」馬嫂說道，
「我該繼續努力的就是做好防守、提昇自我，儘可能幫球隊取勝。」

The Jazz's injury concerns played no small part in the decision, with general
manager Kevin O'Connor announcing that Kyle Korver would receive a second
opinion on the inflamed left knee that has kept him out of six of seven
preseason games.

爵士會有如此決定與隊上傷兵累累脫不了干係，
歐總管特別提到要ΚΚ換個醫生好好檢查他發炎的左膝蓋。

"We really told him, 'Look, this is frustrating to you, it's frustrating to
us, we need you to go have this looked at by somebody else so you're more
comfortable in your head where it's at,' " O'Connor said.

「我們跟他講白啦，現在這樣狀況不明大家都不好受，」歐總管說，
「他得去給別的醫生看看到底怎麼回事，免得心裡有疙瘩。」

Korver previously said that he had undergone multiple MRI exams and was told
consistently that rest alone would be enough to heal his knee. O'Connor did
not want to speculate about the possibility that Korver would have to undergo
surgery.

ΚΚ原本說他已經做了好幾次MRI檢查，
結果都是告訴他多休息就會自然康復，
但歐總管可不想到頭來ΚΚ還是得進開刀房。

"We're just concerned that he's having pain in it and where it goes from
here," O'Connor said, adding that the Jazz were insistent Korver seek a
second opinion after he was unable to play Tuesday at Portland.

「再這麼耗下去萬一他給我芽起來怎麼辦！」
歐總管堅持ΚΚ得找別的醫生重新診斷。

O'Connor will wait to make Matthews' status official until he learns more
about Korver. However, with only 13 players under contract, the Jazz would
face the prospect of opening the season with a 10-man team without Matthews.

雖然歐總管說要等ΚΚ病情明確一點才會決定要不要簽馬嫂，
但老實講爵士僅存13個合約球員中目前只剩10個可用之兵。

Matt Harpring is out indefinitely with ankle and knee issues while C.J. Miles
isn't expected to play for another month after undergoing thumb surgery.
Ronnie Brewer, meanwhile, won't travel to Sacramento for tonight's preseason
finale due to back spasms.

疑似正秘密進行生化改造的老哈就別提了，
西街少年拇指手術後大概也還要再一個月才能歸隊，
小酒則因背部痙攣將缺席最後一場在國王主場的熱身賽。

Asked how close he felt to making the NBA, Matthews said, "Unbelievably
close, but at the same time, I still have no idea how far I have to go, so I
just try to keep it day by day."

當被問到打職籃的夢想是否就要成真時，馬嫂說：
「看起來確實近在咫尺，但變數還是在呀，偶只能埋頭苦幹啦～」

Matthews' father, Wes, who played nine seasons in the NBA and was a member of
two Los Angeles Lakers championship teams in the 1980s, was elated by
Thursday's news.

馬嫂的老子曾在NBA打了九季，
80年代在湖人隊拿到兩只冠軍戒，
聽到兒子這麼爭氣的他現在可是眉開眼笑。

"I'm like, 'Wow,' the elder Matthews said by phone. "That's like a dream come
true for him, and for me -- to have your offspring make the NBA. Words can't
even describe right now how I'm feeling."

「喔喔喔～他能圓夢也算了卻我一樁心願啦，」電話那頭他老子說了，
「子承父業而且還是進NBA，超爽的咧～～～！」

O'Connor suggested the Jazz weren't inclined to explore signing a player who
has been released by another team over keeping a player like Matthews. The
Jazz must set their roster by Monday afternoon.

歐總管說爵士並不傾向再去找別隊釋出的球員簽約，
亦即留下像馬嫂這樣的球員將會是優先選項，
最終版的球員登錄名單必須在週一下午前確定。

"I think history will tell you that we kind of like to keep the guys that
we've had through training camp," O'Connor said. "Jarron [Collins] earned it
eight or nine years ago and he stayed with us."

「一直以來我們都偏好從訓練營開始就跟著我們的球員，」歐總管說，
「就像杰倫八九年前也是這樣留下來的。」

Matthews has started three preseason games and averaged 7.6 points in 20.9
minutes, allowing him to entertain some thoughts of how he would contribute
to the Jazz this season.

馬嫂有三場熱身賽擔任先發，平均上場20.9分鐘得7.6分，
算得上是小有貢獻。

"This team already has so much, I just feel like I can help add on to it,"
said Matthews, who added that he was trying to stayed focused on what he can
control as opposed to the roster decision.

「這支球隊已經夠強了，但我想我還能夠再錦上添花。」馬嫂強調。

"Just bring toughness and intensity. Defense, energy, running the court. I
picked up the system pretty well, can make open shots, can make plays for
others. I just feel like there's a lot that I can do to help this team."

「進攻要硬，防守要積極，隨時跑動，我很能適應這樣的戰術，」
「我能夠把握空檔，也願意傳球，很多事情我都幫得上忙啊～」

Matthews has his share of supporters among his teammates, including Ronnie
Price, who broke into the NBA himself as an undrafted rookie with Sacramento.

馬嫂也得到同樣是未選秀球員出身的隊友真‧王牌的支持。

"He deserves everything that he's given," Price said. "He's a hard worker, an
outstanding player and an even better guy. ... The way he handles himself, I
think he's right on track."

「他值得用合約肯定啦，這麼努力，又有天份...」真‧王牌極力催票，
「而且這個人律己甚嚴，邁向成功只是時間問題啦！」

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said Matthews has shown "a great deal of know-how, you
might say," adding that Matthews' four years at Marquette served him well,
leaving him more experienced than a typical rookie.

教皇則稱許馬嫂對球隊戰術的解讀能力相當良好，
大學四年的歷練讓他與一般的菜鳥明顯有別。

"He's had some good moments and he's played hard," Sloan said. "He seems to
have a little toughness and those things. We'll see where he goes, you know?"

「他態度認真，偶有佳作，」教皇說，
「看起來又很像耐操耐磨，且待老衲好好調教一番，嘿...」

Even by making the Jazz, Matthews' future would remain a day-to-day
proposition. He is signed for the rookie minimum $457,588, but his contract
doesn't have to be guaranteed for the season until Jan. 10.

就算真的成為爵士一員，馬嫂的未來還不見得「馬上」有保障，
他那份最底薪的菜鳥合同要到明年一月才會確定執行。

After enduring an injury-ravaged 2008-09 season, which was blamed for the
Jazz's eighth-place Western Conference finish, Sloan was asked about his
concern starting this season with Miles and Korver both hurt.

在度過了輪休不息的前一個艱難賽季後，
教皇被問到開季可能又要面對傷兵問題的想法。

"They aren't going to call the games off," Sloan said. "We have to go ahead
and play and hopefully somebody steps up and plays and takes up the slack of
what we're trying to do and that's to win."

「你馬滴番顛，比賽又不會因此而取消，」教皇說，
「打還是照打啊，就看誰能夠挺身而出，」
「只要戰術能夠確實執行，就會有辦法贏球。」
