Illinois could retire Williams' number Posted by: Paul Klee Friday, September 28, 2007 7:51 PM Rodney Alexander was hoping to wear the No. 5 jersey at Illinois. Only one problem. "They said it would better if I got another one," said Alexander, a junior college transfer who settled on No. 23. Why's that? There have been discussions about retiring No. 5, worn famously by Utah Jazz and USA Basketball point guard Deron Williams. Just in case it happens this year -- if it happens at all -- Alexander was implored to pursue an alternate set of threads. Seems like a fine year to retire No. 5, doesn't it? Williams is probably going to be named to the United States roster for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and, at 23, he's well on his way to a first All-Star game appearance. Illinois coach Bruce Weber is a proponent of retiring the No. 5 jersey, a process that could happen sooner or later, but sounds promising either way. Williams would not be the only one, Weber said. "It's something that we have talked a lot about. I really pushed (for it)," Weber said. "I think what they will probably do, if it all goes well, is retire the jerseys of the All-Century team first and then go from there." http://www.news-gazette.com/blogs/basketblog/ 2007/09/28/illinois_could_retire_williams_number -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 219.135.156.186
