Deron Williams knows what's coming his way, and the thought of it riveted a
smile onto his face the other day. The Jazz are about to give him a max-money
extension that will pay him somewhere between $50 million and $90 million,
depending on whether he signs for three years at the short end or five at the
long.

一想到自己就要發了，
蝶龍就連做夢都會笑。

苦主爵士即將雙手奉上五千至九千萬不等的現金，
端看蝶龍自個兒想要在這鬼地方逗留多久。

It's up to him.

一切都他說了算。

He's got the power here, and everybody knows it.

癩痢米勒可是大氣都不敢吭一聲。

Not bad for a young basketball player who too often in the past had little
power and, in his mind, even less respect. He had been left off junior summer
club teams and wasn't considered the best player on his high school varsity.
After having proved he could play, he wanted to go to North Carolina, but the
Tar Heels told him he could come only if Raymond Felton didn't. When he
turned to Georgia Tech, coaches there blew him off for Jarrett Jack.

對年輕人而言，現在當然是功成名就了，
但回顧過去，他也曾經歷過ㄤㄋ鬥狗的悲慘歲月。

初中時無法入選暑期聯盟的隊伍也就算了，
到高中他也不曾被視為是隊上最強的那個人，
等到好不容易證明自己有幾分斤兩後，
蝶龍想讀北卡，卻被告知等費爾頓不來念再說，
於是他又試著申請喬治亞理工學院，
那邊的教練卻不留情面地告訴他他們心儀的是傑克。

Following his freshman year at Illinois, when he scored just six points a
game and fans were clamoring for him to be thrown into the junk heap, he
nearly transferred to Texas, but T.J. Ford was there. When he finally came to
the Jazz, via a very respectful No. 3 pick, he was benched by Jerry Sloan in
favor of a couple of scrub point guards, a move that caused Williams to, as
he puts it, "hate" the coach. Later, he was left off the NBA All-Star team,
and went on to play some of the best ball of his life.

在伊利諾大學度過場均只有六分的新鮮人球季後，
當地球迷紛紛叫嚷著不如把他扔到拉機堆算了，
心灰意冷的蝶龍差點就要轉學回德州大學，
殘念的是那邊老早就有一台福特卡好位啦。

幾經奮鬥，蝶龍最終在選秀會上以尊貴、不凡的第三順位被帶出場，
沒想到等著他的卻是教頭史龍惡名昭彰寒冰地獄般的控衛試煉，
在板凳上坐到長瘡之後，蝶龍甚至公開聲稱他恨透了史龍。

當然囉，這只是一段日後由恨生愛的偉大戀情的開始。

唯一叫人感到遺憾的是，雖然這兩季蝶龍的個人成績蒸蒸日上，
一年一度的明星賽卻始終沒有他的份兒，
反倒是另外一位偽明星隊友玩得挺開心。

Yeah, it's great to be Deron Michael Williams, and everybody knows that now,
too.

不過好像也不用這麼在意啦，
即便是經歷了這一拖拉庫的不順遂，
蝶龍的厲害現在可是連下港都有名聲啦！

Ring is the thing

urrr...my precious...

He's really good, and about to be really rich, regardless of the course he
takes.

不管他最後決定簽幾年，
總之大把大把的鈔票是跑不掉的。

Williams can choose the briefer route, and broaden his options thereafter
with other clubs. And freak out Jazz fans everywhere. Or he can select the
extended one in Utah and enjoy the security that comes with the sure money.
Or he could split the difference in time and pay.

蝶龍當然可以先簽個短期合約，好為將來繞跑做準備，
只是那些癡心爵隊的阿宅球迷恐怕就得哭天喊地了。

不過他也可以就這麼安安穩穩地待在猶他舔指數錢，
不管怎麼算吃虧的永遠不會是他。

He says the contract likely will be agreed upon over the next few weeks,
after he returns from a family vacation on the Mayan Riviera and before he
heads for Beijing with Team USA.

蝶龍說新合約會在幾週內搞定，
不過要先等他們全家度假回來，
但是絕對會在他去北京前喬好。

"I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do," he says. "I like it here, but,
as a player, you want to see the direction the franchise is going."

「你現在問我什麼我都不知道啊～」蝶龍說，
「當然我愛這塊地方，但球員嘛，總希望能看到球隊的遠景在哪。」

Translation: Keep improving this team to my satisfaction and I'm your guy.
Cheap out and I'm vapor.

話中有話：麻煩以老子為中心組建一支俺想要的球隊，
不然就等著看老子從鹽湖城人間蒸發吧。

"If we're on the verge of winning a championship," says Williams, "I have no
problem staying here my whole career."

「有奪冠希望我當然會一輩子都待在這兒啊！」真敢講。

If that's as much a threat as it is a promise, it speaks well of the
24-year-old point guard, heading now into his fourth year. The Jazz
euphemistically call his stance "taking ownership," and it is, in fact, that
and more. The glad news is, Williams is happy to be a wealthy man and all,
but his designs reach beyond just having more money than King Farouk. He
wants to win like Michael Jordan.

不管這是威脅還是承諾，年輕人敢講這種話還真有尬哧，
爵士高層委婉地說蝶龍正逐漸成為隊上唯一的那個頭兒，
事實是他宰制球隊的程度未來只會更多不會更少。
可以慶幸的是，這位將來的闊少除了錢並沒有失去對冠軍的渴望，
他想要贏，就像他的偶像米糕‧●●那樣。

"I grew up with no money," Williams says. "I love having it, taking care of
my family. But I'm a competitive person. In college, I used to go play ball
at 3:30 in the morning with Dee [Brown] and Luther [Head]. You couldn't keep
us away from the court. We'd go to the gym at midnight or 1 a.m. or anytime,
and you didn't want to lose. If you did, you'd be mad the rest of the night.

「我小時候窮慣了，」蝶龍說，「現在有錢顧家當然是好事，」

"I want to win. I'll never lose that. If I get a max deal, I want to earn it.
I don't want anyone to be able to say, 'He's stealing money.' "

「如果拿到頂級合約，我一定會證明給你看我值得那價錢，」
「我受不了有人在旁邊說："看，那個拿錢擺爛的傢伙！"這種話。」

Williams has seen that drill before - from a personal vantage point that
still haunts him.

也許正是因為遭受過那樣的冷嘲熱諷，
蝶龍如今說起這些格外刻骨銘心。

Stolen memories

兒時憶往

It goes back to his childhood, when he grew up in his mother's household in
West Virginia and Texas. Denise Smith, a former college athlete, raised him
by herself, working two jobs: one as a computer programmer and another at
Taco Bell. Williams' father, Byron, bailed on the whole parenting endeavor.

蝶龍在媽媽娘家所在的西維吉尼亞跟德州度過他的童年，
曾經是大學運動員的龍媽獨立撫養蝶龍，
為此她得一邊寫電腦程式，一邊在墨西哥速食餐廳打工。

"My dad just disappeared," Williams says. "I never knew him. I don't consider
him my dad. I never thought about him. I never cared."

「他就這麼消失無蹤，我對他根本沒半點印象，」蝶龍說，
「那種人才不配我叫他一聲爹，鬼才去想他在乎他咧！」

When Williams was 8, there was a fleeting, though forgettable, encounter
between Denise, himself and his biological father, when the elder Williams
moved back into the family home for about a month. "He stole all my mom's
money out of her bank account," Williams says. "She didn't have a lot. It was
something like $300 or $400 dollars. But he took it."

實情是，雖然時間短暫，蝶龍八歲時其實是跟他老爸照過面的，
龍爸曾經回家待了一個月左右，跟他們住在一起。

And vanished, again.

Williams wants to neither steal anything, nor vanish.

不過放心，蝶龍是歹竹出好筍。

He says he doesn't care about his non-father, but something either in his own
genetics or his fatherless environment instilled in him that uncommon
competitive drive. In those early years, and later, too, he saw challenges
around every bend, and the aforementioned disrespect in every evaluation.

沒人知道蝶龍異常的好勝心是基因還是環境使然，
畢竟從失去父愛開始，到他打球的每個階段，
質疑、不被尊重的情境總是如影隨形地跟著他，
唯有反抗、爭勝，才能讓自己生存下去。

Part of that was stoked in a world rarely crossed into by multi-sport
basketball players. Williams was a junior state champion wrestler in Texas
when he was 8 and 12. Anyone who has been around wrestlers is familiar with
the alpha-dog phenomenon developed in many of them. It is an arena in which
domination is the understood language of the mat. Williams spoke it well.

又或者，那是來自蝶龍不同於其他籃球員的運動生涯經歷，
八歲與十二歲時，蝶龍曾經是德州少年摔角的冠軍選手，
熟悉那世界的人必然知道摔角手為了保護地盤不惜以命相搏的現象，
在那個四方形的平台上，完全宰制對手代表一切，
而年輕的蝶龍顯然是通曉此道的箇中好手。

"I loved wrestling," he says. "I was quick and I was strong. Wrestling helped
my competitiveness. It helped me to survive."

「我一想到摔角就愛死它了啦，齁～」蝶龍說，
「別看我身材就以為我是個大隻佬，其實我動作也很迅速喔！」
「是摔角養成了我凡事求勝的性格，幫助了我在逆境中求生。」

Switching sports

Under his mom's tutelage, basketball took over in subsequent years, just in
time to bump Williams away from trouble when he was in middle school, when,
he says, "I started hanging out with the wrong people." He might have played
football, except that high school football in Texas was "too hot."

在龍媽的循循善誘下，接下來幾年蝶龍對籃球的愛日益滋長，
這也讓當時還是中學生的蝶龍避開了很多可能惹事生非的麻煩。
「嗯，那時候我的確是不小心交到一些壞朋友...」

本來蝶龍也有可能跑去踢美式足球，
不過德州對美式足球的狂熱遠勝其他球類，
高中球員想在其中出頭競爭只有更加激烈。

"I wish I had played football," he says. "I would have played safety because
I like hitting people."

「我還真希望當初有去踢美式足球咧，」蝶龍說，
「在對手的得分區把人撲倒這點是我最會的啦，嘿嘿～」

註：所謂的Safety是指在對方得分區成功地撲倒對方持球的球員。
一次成功的Safety可以獲得兩分，並且得到進攻權。

Instead, Williams was disrespected only on the court.

不過，籃球場上的蝶龍還是沒能獲得他想要的敬重。

He thought he should have made the varsity at The Colony High School in The
Colony, Texas, as a ninth-grader. He didn't. "My coach used to try to get me
mad," Williams says, "because I play better when I'm mad."

本來他以為自己篤定會被當地的高中校隊看上眼，
但當時初中即將畢業的他，最後卻落得一場空。
「教練大概是想要逼我抓狂給他看，」
「因為我一抓狂起來只會打得更好。」蝶龍自嘲道。

At times, throughout his prep career, unselfishness was mistaken for lesser
talent.

在蝶龍的運動生涯早期，
不自私的表現有時反倒被誤會為是缺乏天份。

"My high school coach, Tommy Thomas, was an inspiration," Williams says. "We
had a structured system. It taught me how to play. When I got to college,
those guys didn't even know how to play."

「我高中教練湯馬斯的系統組織觀念啟迪了我，」蝶龍說，
「它教會了我怎麼去打團隊籃球，」
「拜託，很多傢伙進了大學都還不曉得團隊合作是怎麼回事咧！」

Alongside Williams, the Illinois Illini would learn.

Seven years after he made it, Deron Williams remains a bit baffled by his
decision to go to Illinois out of his Texas high school. Having grown up
mostly in and around Dallas, he'd never been to the university, and had no
real connection to it.

蝶龍還是摸不著頭緒自己當初怎會願意離鄉背井到伊利諾去打拼，
跟這所大學完全沒有任何關聯的他，
過去生活的範圍從來就沒有離開過達拉斯一帶。

After other schools, such as North Carolina and Georgia Tech, had blown him
off, Williams was coaxed into heading north by fellow incoming freshman Dee
Brown, who correctly surmised that the 6-foot-3, 205-pound guard could help
him win Big Ten championships - and maybe something bigger.

在被北卡與喬治亞相繼拒絕入學後（見前篇），
來自伊利諾的說客滴‧布朗鼓動他的三吋不爛之舌，
勸服這名六呎三吋、兩百零五磅的爿士後衛，
與他一同追逐大十聯盟的冠軍盃，甚至是更遠大的野望。

Still, Williams suffered in his first year with the Illini, despite starting
30 of 32 games and ranking third in the conference in assists. His sufferings
ranged from the emotional to the meteorological.

在伊利諾的第一年依然讓他感覺身心俱疲，
不僅是情感上，還有一些是地理因素所引起。

"It was cold," he says. "I was homesick. I wanted to leave my whole freshman
year."

When his coach, Bill Self, took the job at Kansas at the end of that 2002-03
season, Williams was almost certain he wanted out. "I was going to transfer,"
he says. "I'd never heard of Bruce Weber. I didn't know him. Dee and Luther
[Head] convinced me to stay."

02-03球季在得知從前帶過他的教練要入主肯大的時候，
蝶龍幾乎確定自己馬上就會轉學離開伊利諾，

There was another matter, a more personal one: In 2002, Williams had a baby
daughter with his longtime girlfriend and future wife, Amy - "I've known her
since the second grade," he says. Williams was still a teenager, and a little
unsure how best to handle his new role and responsibilities. He never knew
his own father, and that weighed heavy on his mind.

那一年還發生了一件大事，雖然嚴格說來只能算是他的私事：
他跟長跑多年的女友、後來成為他老婆的愛美有了愛的結晶。
「我們打從二年級就認識對方了！」還只是個小毛頭的蝶龍，

畢竟他從來就不曾享受過父愛，而這成為他心中的一大塊陰影。

"When I found out I was going to have a child, I wasn't mad, I just didn't
know if I was ready for that," Williams says. "I was scared, scared to tell
my mom. I didn't want to run from it. That's one of the reasons I thought
about transferring [back to a school in Texas]. I flew in and out of Dallas
to see her born. It was crazy, a great experience."

「在得知就要當爸爸了的時候，我並沒有因此失去理智，」
「相反地，我開始質疑自己是否已經做好準備，」
「我嚇到一開始還不敢跟老媽報告這消息咧，」
「但我知道我不會去逃避它。」

「經歷一個小生命誕生的體驗真是太奇特、太萬德佛了！」

Meantime, Weber took stock of what was on hand at Illinois and quickly
figured out that Williams was his best player. He switched up the offense,
featuring the guard more, which allowed Williams to expand his game. Although
he broke his jaw in December of that second season, necessitating the
insertion of a plate and four screws, he led the team in scoring (14 points)
and averaged more than six assists. Williams was an all-Big Ten selection.

同時間，韋伯教練在檢視後立刻發現蝶龍才是他所擁有最好的球員，
於是他馬上著手改變攻擊戰術，提昇後衛的參與度，
好讓蝶龍能夠在場上全力施展拳腳。
雖然十二月蝶龍一度在他大學的第二個球季跌斷了下巴，
甚至為此捱了四根鋼釘，他還是打出全隊最高平均每場十四分的佳績，
同時平均助攻數也突破六個，並且入選大十聯盟的明星隊。

In his junior year, Williams was comfortable mostly feeding the ball to his
teammates - "I didn't have to score," he says, "I didn't care, as long as we
won" - and he enjoyed the college life in Champaign. Amy and the baby moved
to Illinois to be closer to Williams, who was probably a more mature player
than a fully grown adult at that stage. He lived and learned in both arenas.

本來菜鳥球季時，蝶龍習慣餵球的程度遠超過他得分的慾望，
「我不需要得分，我不在乎那個，只要我們能贏球就好。」
而後他發現自己愈來愈能融入香檳校區的生活，
因為愛美跟他的寶貝女兒都搬到伊利諾來了，
這也幫助了他在球場上與生活中變得更加成熟。

"We were treated like rock stars on that campus," he says.

「當時球隊在校園裡受歡迎的程度可一點都不輸搖滾巨星哪！」

The Illini went undefeated - until losing by one point to Ohio State in the
last game of the regular season. In a memorable NCAA Tournament, they came
back from a substantial deficit late against Arizona to beat the Wildcats in
overtime. Williams exerted himself in the final minutes in a manner with
which Jazz fans have become familiar, scoring 15 points over that short,
decisive span. "I still haven't watched that game," he says. "I'm waiting.
Maybe I'll watch it with my kids one day." Illinois went on to lose to UNC in
the title game.

伊利諾校隊這一年幾乎可以說是所向披靡，
一直到季賽最後一戰對俄亥俄州大才以一分飲恨。
他們在NCAA錦標賽中的表現同樣令人印象深刻，

「我還沒能去回顧那場比賽，」蝶龍說，
「我在等著，也許有一天跟我的小孩一起回味，哈哈。」
那年的冠亞軍爭霸，伊利諾很可惜地輸給了北卡。

Thereafter, the Jazz moved up to take Williams with the No. 3 pick of the
2005 draft.

緊接著，爵士就在選秀會上用第三順位籤偷走了蝶龍。

Life as a rookie

He says he was pleased by the move, that it finally showed him the respect he
had craved since being undersold, at least in his view, by so many coaches
and observers through his basketball career.

蝶龍深深為自己的選秀順位這麼頭前感到光榮，
這填補了他長久以來想要被別人肯定的渴望，
特別是在很多教練或媒體觀察員都不看好他的情況下。

Williams had no problem going to Utah.

到鹽湖城報到這件事兒，對蝶龍來說完全沒有困擾。

"All I cared about was winning," he says. "I had four kids on my high school
team who were Mormon. I knew them. They never seemed weird to me. I thought
this was the best situation for me."

「我想要的就是進一支能贏球的隊伍，」他說，
「我高中隊友有四個都是摩門教徒，我了解他們，」
「摩門教徒跟我們一樣都是平凡人，沒什麼特別的，」
「所以能夠為猶他打球，我深感榮幸。」

Williams had his doubts later, when Jerry Sloan limited his minutes through
his rookie season, sometimes playing guys like Keith McLeod and Milt Palacio
in front of him. At the time, Sloan justified his actions by saying that John
Stockton didn't start as a rookie, why should Williams? The trouble with that
thinking was that Stockton had Rickey Green, an All-Star point guard, ahead
of him. Williams had two scrubs.

不過這不代表從此就可以過著幸福快樂的日子，
教皇嚴格限縮這名菜鳥的上場時間，
McLeod與Palacio這兩個不成氣候的傢伙反而比較受到重用。
教皇的說法是：就算是老史當初菜鳥的時候也沒打過先發呀，
有什麼理由為了蝶龍破這個例？
問題是當初擋在老史前頭的可是大名鼎鼎的明星後衛Green，
而蝶龍前面這兩個，ㄟ，剛剛我說他們叫什麼名字來著？

"I probably should have played him more back then," Sloan confessed during
the Jazz's most recent playoff run, three seasons after the fact.

「現在想想我那時候還真該讓他多打些...」來自教皇的告解，
在看了蝶龍近三季的成長與季後賽力拔山河的驚人表現之後。

Williams agrees, but he knew it from jump.

蝶龍同意這樣的看法，
不過他可是從他還菜嗶吧的時候就如是想了。

"That first year, I was the best point guard here," he says. "No disrespect
to those other guys, but if I had started from the beginning, we would have
made the playoffs that year. We were only two wins away.

「打第一年開始，我就知道我是隊上最好的控球後衛，」
「那兩個叫什麼名字來著的，喔抱歉沒有冒犯你們的意思，」
「只是如果能夠讓我一開始就打先發，那年我們一定可以進季後賽，」
「結果你也知道啦，就是差了那麼兩步。」

"It was just Coach Sloan. He pissed me off - a lot. I hated him. I hated him.
I didn't like him too much . . . I was still going to play hard. Some guys
cry about it. I was going to play hard, no matter what. That's just me."

And that's why another issue with Sloan - an insinuation by the coach - that
angered Williams was his suggestion that the point guard needed to become
more diligent in his practice habits. "Coach talked about me not working
hard," he says. "I don't like to get into that." But he wanted to prove Sloan
wrong, just the way he had proved others wrong.

教皇的另一個說法更是讓蝶龍不爽到極點，
他說希望隊上控衛的練球態度可以更積極勤奮一些，
「教練根本就是針對我發言，但我沒有也不喜歡被別人這樣說。」

That kind of sentiment and motivation was right in his wheelhouse.

One additional hiccup that first season was Williams' infamous "Torrey Ellis"
episode in Park City with Robert Whaley, during which the Jazz rookies
scuffled with a bar patron, and, in the aftermath, gave police fabricated
names. They also initially lied to the Jazz about the incident. It's another
thing Williams doesn't like to get into, but it did bring to his attention a
serious need to further grow up. If he was going to become the Jazz's
centerpiece, he had to get smart - as a man and as a player.

他的菜鳥球季曾飽受在帕克市發生的「艾莉絲事件」困擾，
他與隊友Whaley在當地一家酒吧與人客發生扭打衝突，

The most striking thing about Deron Williams' recent press conference
officially announcing his making the U.S. Olympic basketball team was the
humility he showed in that moment.

前不久當聯盟正式發佈蝶龍入選美國奧運代表隊的消息時，
向來被認為自視甚高的他卻出人意料地表現得格外謙遜。

"It's an honor for me to represent my country," he said. "I'm thrilled to
death."

「能夠代表祖國出賽是至高無上的榮譽，」蝶龍說，
「我現在感覺激動到全身都在打顫呢！」

Those words didn't flow forth at the end of a disingenuous
blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah-blah kind of prepared statement. He seemed
truly moved by the privilege, as though it really meant something to him.

這些話可不是在打官腔，
蝶龍看起來真的是深深被這項肯定給打動，
彷如對他來說這件事有著無可取代的意義。

"It does," he says.

「的確是這樣沒錯。」蝶龍證實。

There are times when Williams puts the con in confident, when he comes across
as surly and bothered and petulant - "Sometimes, I am a jackass," he admits -
and others when he's about as deep and thoughtful and engaging as an NBA
player ever gets.

蝶龍的好勝心讓人有時覺得他表面上看來暴躁又惹人討厭，
蝶龍自己也承認：「對，我有時候脾氣就是這麼驢！」
不過更多時候他比聯盟中的任何人都要投入比賽，想得更深遠。

On the verge of signing a maxed-out contract extension with the Jazz that
could pay the 24-year-old upwards of $100 million, Williams remains tethered
to a modest upbringing that hammered into him a full measure of perspective.

雖然處身即將簽下大筆合同的前夕，
蝶龍也不曾表現得看起來像是被錢沖昏了頭。
或許是他童年的處境與教養告訴了他，事情不能只看一面。

"I grew up with no money," he says.

「我從來就不是個有錢人。」他說。

And while the second-team All-NBA point guard now stands on the brink of real
fame and fortune, he's managed to convince himself that delivering on the
court is what matters, that humility is still important, that he's not really
that big a deal.

"Hey," he says, "I've walked through a hotel lobby with Kobe, with LeBron."

He's had his name mispronounced - Yo, T-Mac! - his entire life.

更別提這一生中有多少次他的名字會被大家念錯了。

"Deron Williams is going to be a household name after this series."

「這個系列賽後蝶龍的名字肯定會變得家喻戶曉！」

Those were Charles Barkley's words, spouted to his TNT audience after Game 1
of the Jazz-Warriors second-round playoff series in 2007. Williams had 31
points and eight assists in that Western semifinals opener, which was just
one example of the point guard's prowess at the end of his second season.

在觀賞了去年爵士對勇士第二輪第一場的比賽後，
大屁股查爾斯爵士對TNT的觀眾發表了上述的言論。
那場比賽蝶龍攻下三十一分，還有八次助攻，
而這樣的表現僅是他第二季持續大爆發的其中一場罷了。

That campaign had been a coming up and out for Williams, especially the
playoffs, during which he averaged 19 points and nine assists in the Jazz's
surprising run to the Western Conference finals.

在戰役中挺身而出對於蝶龍來說早已不是第一次，
在季後賽的激戰中，他的這項特質尤為突出，
那年，他用平均十九分九助攻的佳績帶領球隊進入西區總決賽。

The whole thing had been facilitated by Jerry Sloan's willingness to turn the
club over to Williams, allowing him to steer the Jazz's offensive sets as he
saw fit, a nod by the coach that not even John Stockton had wanted.

隨著教皇將愈來愈大量的戰術執行權交到他手上，
蝶龍也變得更有自信以一己之力引領這支球隊，
這樣的風格跟老史時代比起來可是截然不同。

After a rocky rookie season with Sloan, Williams took whatever he could get
this time around. And he got a lot, despite the Jazz's acquisition of veteran
Derek Fisher, who Williams was determined to edge for playing time: "I knew I
had to beat him out," he says.

在經歷過與教皇相敬如冰的第一個球季後，
現在的蝶龍總算是雲破月開、得償所願，
即便球隊日後找來同位置的老將漁夫，
他的上場時間也不曾因此有所減損。
「漁夫的到來只會激起我不能打得比他少的鬥志啊！」蝶龍說。

So, he did, playing 37 minutes a game, getting 16 points and 10 assists, and,
more significantly, leading the Jazz to a Midwest Division title before
marching them through three playoff series.

他確實辦到了，平均上場三十七分鐘的時間，
同時還擁有十六分、十助攻的績效，
當年更率領球隊一舉拿下久違的西北組王座。

"I took it to another level in the playoffs," Williams says. "I figured out
how to bring it every night. If I'm aggressive, I could do that. It was a
great learning experience for me - tough games, big wins, hard losses, it all
adds up. You've got to pay attention and learn your lessons."

「到了季後賽我的檔次只會提昇不會下降，」蝶龍說到，
「只要保持鬥志，我就能將功力催谷到極點，」
「艱難的勝利、難堪的失敗對我而言都是最好的教材，」
「只要你夠在乎，你就能夠從中學到教訓。」

That's what 2006-07 turned into for Williams: an elongated study session on
fulfilling his potential. The season started strong for the Jazz, who went
12-1 out of the gate, and finished with 51 wins, heading into their first
playoff appearance in four years. That extended playoff showing, like Barkley
suggested, gave a national audience its first long look at Williams.

06-07球季對蝶龍來說就是一次最好的學習體驗，
那一年他們開季就打出12勝1負的好成績，
最後拿下51勝，並且進入睽違許久的季後賽。
而在季後賽中，就如同查爾斯爵士所說過的那樣，
全國軍民同胞都看見了，那個潛力無限的蝶龍。

His competitive drive and leadership became obvious in his clutch
performances and, when the Jazz lost to the Spurs in the conference finals, a
broad spectrum of fans got a glimpse of Williams' fire when he publicly
drilled a few teammates who he said had been planning summer vacations while
there were still playoff games to win.

蝶龍的求勝意志與強勢領導風格在生死交關之際尤其明顯，
當爵士最終在西區總決賽被馬刺給淘汰了之後，
蝶龍在賽後記者會中絲毫不留情面地批評少數隊友的求勝心不足，
甚至早已開始安排暑假計畫，而不是專注在尚有可為的決賽。

That thought was abhorrent to Williams, and he let everybody know it.

對，他就是這麼渴求勝利，
不管這樣的話說出來會得罪多少人，
他就是要讓每個人都知道，他不甘心更不願放手。

He says now it might have been wiser to handle that matter privately, but all
the players around the new Jazz leader discovered for themselves what his
expectations were and are. He became the Jazz's undisputed boss, a no-B.S.
point man with plenty of street cred, willing to play hurt, willing to speak
out, willing to show the way. He had matured - as a player and a man.

他現在說那件事私底下解決也許會是更明智更不傷和氣的做法，
但隊友們現在都明白他所追求的從過去到現在都只有一個，就是勝利。
蝶龍變成球隊領袖的這件事無庸置疑，
不再亂放炮的他用自己的表現贏得所有人的信賴與仰仗，
當然他還是那個一條腸子通到底的傢伙，
只是他知道帶領球隊才是他當下該做好且最重要的事。
毫無疑問地，他的態度變得更成熟了。

"I want to win," he says. "But that doesn't just happen."

「我想要的就是繼續贏下去，只是當初結束得有些可惜。」

Sloan loves that stuff. That's exactly why, after their difficult start, the
player and coach have embraced one another.

這不正是教皇最想要的球員態度嗎？
這也說明了為什麼兩人在第一年瀕臨破裂後，
關係反而能如倒吃甘蔗漸入佳境的原因。

"He has tremendous talent," the coach said, following a huge win in the
Houston series this postseason. "I don't know where this team would be
without him."

「球隊要是沒有他老早就回家看電視啦！」

Says Williams: "I get along with [Sloan] great now. I think he's a great
coach. He brings a lot to the table. He's a lot like me."

In 2007-08, when the point guard raised his averages to 19 and 10 in the
regular season and 22 and 10 in the playoffs, Williams observed that his team
needs to "win on the road." He singled out the top players on the Jazz,
saying they, in particular, have to get tougher and more consistent away from
EnergySolutions Arena.

上一季，蝶龍的個人表現達到十九分、十助攻的好成績，
到了季後賽，他的績效更一舉擢升到廿二分，助攻同樣破十。
然而他也注意到球隊的大問題：在客場一勝難求。
他指出特別是主將們，在客場應該要打得更果斷、勇敢，
而不是一出了鹽湖城就變得軟趴趴。

"You've got to have your stars play great on the road," he says. "I feel like
I was that way. [But] we definitely have more confidence at home."

As for the way this past Jazz season ended, Williams says this: "The Lakers
were a better team."

In recent weeks, he's been talking with Kevin O'Connor about how the Jazz can
improve. "We need an athletic big man," he says. "We need a shot-blocker."

「我想我們需要一個充滿機動力的大高個兒，一個能搧鍋的好手。」

Williams is giving input on personnel matters, although he acknowledges that
others in the organization might be more informed than he is. Still, he has
ideas, and appreciates the chance to be heard. He's fully aware that he has
become the foundation for the Jazz's future, and is fine with it, as long as
the club continues to build a contender.

蝶龍雖然不吝於提供個人的想法，
但也知道他的意見不代表一切，
畢竟球隊有時候有球隊的考量，
但他對於能夠被徵詢意見依然心懷感恩。
他心裡明白自己是爵士遠大未來的那塊基石，

"It's about winning," he says, again.

「只要能贏球，什麼都好說！」蝶龍又複述了一遍。

He will decide soon whether to sign a three-year, four-year, or five-year
extension with the Jazz, and will be paid max money in any case. Williams
recently bought a new house, and, unlike most of his teammates, lives in Salt
Lake City year-round.

他即將面臨要跟爵士續幾年約的問題，
但不管如何他都能夠拿到最大筆的錢。
蝶龍最近剛在鹽湖城買了新房子，
跟大部分的隊友不一樣，他一整年都住在這兒。

"I like it here," he says. "It's peaceful, the weather's good. I like to
golf. It's unbearable to golf [in the summer] in Dallas. My wife loves it
here. It's not like there's nothing to do."

「我愛死了這地方的平和與好天氣，」蝶龍說，
「你也知道我愛打高爾夫，但夏天在達拉斯打根本會要人命。」
「我老婆也喜歡這座小城，所以啦！」

Regarding the details of his coming deal, Williams says: ". . . as a player,
you want to see the direction the franchise is going. If we're on the verge
of winning a championship, I have no problem staying here my whole career."

在被問到新合約的細節內容時，蝶龍只說：
「一個球員最想看到的當然就是球隊的未來，」
「假如球隊能夠持續保有爭冠的實力，」
「要我一輩子都待在這兒我也願意啊！」

It's up to the Jazz, then, to keep their foundation in place by continuing to
put up sound walls around him. He'll bear his load here, if they bear theirs.

意思是只要爵士能拿出誠意組建、維持一個有足夠實力的陣容，
就永遠不用去擔心蝶龍是否會跳槽的流言紛擾，
他會拿出他該有的尬哧與擔當，只要爵士值得他賣命。

"I just want to be the best," he says. "I want us to get better."

「我期許自己能成為最好的球員，」蝶龍說，
「而且我也想要全隊都變得更強、更好。」
