  請先翻譯或介紹其文字內容，並進一步論述凱撒在羅馬由共和時代轉移到帝制時代的
  歷史定位。
  (p. 197) Julius Caesar ( 100 - 44 B.C.E ) was the first living Roman to have
  his portrait depicted on a coin, defying the tradition of showing only dead
  persons. After he won the civil war in 45 B.C.E. Caesar broke that
  tradition, as he did many others, to show that he was Rome's supreme leader.
  Here he wears the laurel wreath of a conquering general. The portrait
  conforms to late republican style, in which the subject is shown
  realistically. Caesar's wrinkled neck and careworn expression emphasize the
  suffering he had endured ─ and imposed on others ─ to reach the pinnacle
  of success.

  (p. 508) Some [scholars] point out the many continuities between the Middle
  Ages and the Renaissance; others argue that the Renaissance was not a
  secular but a profoundly religious age; and still others see the Renaissance
  as only the beginning of a long period of transition from the Middle Age to
  modernity.  The consensus among scholars is that the Renaissance represents
  a distinct cultural period lasting from the fourteenth to the sixteenth
  century, centered on the revival of classical learning and spreading from
  Italy to northern Europe.  Historians disagree about the significance of
  this cultural rebirth for society at large, but they generally understand it
  to represent some of the complex changes that characterized the passing of
  medieval society to modernity.
