THE COMEBACK AGAINST ESPANYOL WAS NOT COMPLETE DESPITE A GOAL BY BARAJA (1-1)

The comeback was not complete. Valencia CF played a match against Espanyol
that went against the grain as highlighted by the early goal by the Catalan,
David Garcia, in the 8th minute of the first half. So the team sent out by
Benitez, a copy of the team that eliminated Arsenal with the exception of
Djukic who replaced a sanctioned Pellegrino, spent 80 minutes trying to turn
things around. They got the equaliser in the second half thanks to Baraja
(min. 59) but they did not manage to get the winning goal despite trying
everything. The match became more and more intense on Valencia’s part and in
the end became a constant siege on the goal defended by Toni. Bad luck in the
last shot on goal and the unfortunate refereeing by Perez Perez, who let by
two penalties against Carew, were the main reasons why our team did not come
away from the match with the three points.

The match started with a cool atmosphere at Mestalla and Espanyol took
advantage of the situation. The Catalans came out onto the field of play well
positioned and they scored a goal in the 8th minute. Ivan de la Pena set a
good pass into the area, Roger opened up towards the left leaving a space for
David Garcia’s arrival and the Espanyol winger put in a good low shot and
Canizares was unable to do anything. Clemente’s team felt the goal was prize
enough and unashamedly settled back to defend their advantage by controlling
Valencia’s advances in their half. In the 23rd minute Reveillere, who was one
of the best players in the match, put a great centre into the area that Carew
headed wide. Valencia controlled the run of play but were not able to score,
they had many corner kicks and during this show of football Perez Perez (who
showed five yellow cards in the first half that had very little violent play)
and so the match came to the end of the first half.

創造出來的絕佳機會，可惜卡大個頂高了，瓦倫西亞控制了場上大部分的時間，卻遲

In the second half the Valencian attacks became even more intense. Albelda
remained the only pivot on the field and Baraja move up the midfield together
with Aimar just behind Carew. Vicente’s performance on the left wing and the
chemistry between Rufete and Reveillere on the right wing meant Valencia were
constantly getting into the Espanyol area. In the 48th minute a centre by
Vicente struck the outside of the net after being deflected by Lopo. Roger
could have made it 0-2 in the 49th minute but his shot off a pass by Tamudo
went wide. In the 59th minute a deadly pass by Reveillere was sent into the
back of the net by Baraja after Carew was brought down in the area. Carew’s
falls in the area were to become the hallmark right up to the end of the match.
In the 64th minute Aimar got away from three markers and managed a crossed
shot which skimmed the wrong side of the right hand post. Only two minutes
later Perez Perez ignored a clear holding of Carew by Soldevilla which got
tempers up in the crowd at Mestalla who remembered the terrible performance
by the referee in the Real Madrid- Valencia match last season. Toni’s goal
was constantly under siege. Aimar came close to scoring 2-1 sliding in to
finish off a great pass by Reveillere from the right wing that did not quite
get into the corner of the goal. Mestalla cheered the goal but their
celebration was mistaken. They were not able to win the match because the
ball did not seam to want to go in. First Rufete’s shot went over the
crossbar off a centre by Vicente (min. 81) and later Aimar headed the ball
into a defenders neck off a very precise centre by Reveillere.

The result was not to be changed and our team will have to continue fighting
to keep their sights on the league title whist they are in the top four of
the table.
