VALENCIA CF LOSES AGAINST FC BARCELONA IN THE LAST GAME IN MESTALLA (1-3)

Sometimes a ninety minute match can reflect the experiences of a whole
season. Unfortunately tonight’s events at Mestalla in the match between
Valencia CF and FC Barcelona has been a synopsis of all that has happened
since the season started in September. It would not be fair to sum up in a
few simple points the reason why they have not classified for the UEFA
Champions’ League. Then again neither would it be to gloss over the many
aggravating circumstances that have been decisive in the final classification
of such a competitive league as the Spanish League. No one could doubt that
Benitez’s men have given their all in the match against FC Barcelona who
played the most complete match for months. But the team has been tripped up
by adverse circumstances that can be digested in small doses but in large
quantities are fatal. It is not normal, and nor should it be, that two
players are sent off and two penalties are given in the same match and when
you are playing at home.
Leaving to one side interpretations as the justice or impartiality of the
referee’s decisions in an moment like this, The first conclusion one has to
come to about the league competition 2002/2003 is that the referees have had
it in for Valencia CF and it is easy to present proof. The first thing that
springs to mind are the matches against Real Sociedad at Anoeta, at Bernabeu
, at Calderon, and tonight’s match (not to mention the eliminatory match
against Inter.)..... held back a team that never had the necessary and
essential continuity to be among the great teams in the fight for the league
championship.It may appear to be the easy way out, to have a go at the
referees but in football the perception and analysis have to go beyond a
simple result. That overall sensation of prolonged injustice will be pounding
in our heads when we consider the performance of Benitez’s men over the
whole of the season. We cannot forget, nor should we, the string of injuries
, incidents and absences... the team has suffered in the last few months.
When the circumstances are extreme and balance reigns the players mark
the difference with their fitness and confidence in the games, there is no
doubt that under these circumstances they are the ones who will decide
whether you are higher up the league table or not. To be in fourth or fifth
position. The player that most marks the difference in a match, Fabio Aurelio
, was off with knee problems, similarly, Vicente who came off the list at the
last minute, Albelda, the pillar around which the run of play rotates only
managed 15 minutes as he was not even at 50% due to an physical overload,
Rufete having been injured had to play as a starter because of Angulo’s
absence.... too many variables that impede the collective performing in
accordance with their potential. No one can affirm to have seen the true
Valencia CF, except in a few specific moments, that stormed the league last
season. When one is plying on the edge you can make up for some adversities
for a time but at the end of the day the chain has to break at its weakest
point.
Of course the team made mistakes but they were no worse than the ones
committed last season in which these same players reached the summit of
sporting glory. One can talk about missed opportunities, of breakdowns in the
defence, of a drop in morale having played a Champion’s match on a Wednesday
, typical circumstances that crop up when there is an unfavourable result but
that are always left in the background when there is a triumph.There will be
time enough to draw definitive conclusions about this edition of the 2002/2003
league whose final chapter will be concluded next week. But the reality is
that the UEFA Cup will be waiting for Valencia CF in four months time. All
that is left for us to do is to hope for the same to happen next season as in
the 2001/2002 league, quarterfinalists in Europe and top of the league in June
. The Rosaleda is not that far away.
