In the press conference prior to tomorrow’s UEFA Champions’ League
match against Inter Rafael Benitez expressed his desire to get the best
out of his team in all the competitions they are in until the end of the
season. The manager reminded everyone that in order to win titles our players
have to be one hundred percent focussed on each and every match starting with
tomorrow’s decisive match against Cuper’s team.
“To me, and above all else, tomorrow’s match is to prove we are able or
not to get through to the semi-finals and if we want to be there. have to
prove who wants to be in Valencia, who has got what it takes to continue in
this team and in this competition. I came here with a lot of plans and we
have won a league title after 31 years. Now we have to show what we want and
what we can do. It time for the brave at heart and for the clever ones. You
must never lose sight of what you want, the initial plans are not as
important as what the team does once it is on the pitch”.
“I hear other managers who play badly and win and when we play well we
rightly win, when we do not play so well we control the game but we do not
win. We still need to improve and we have to demonstrate it on the pitch.
Last year this team with the same players steamrollered in the league this
year we are not winning. Some of the players say there is a lack of desire.
You have to take that on. Valencia is clearly able to beat Inter and to be
among the four best teams in Europe. I am convinced of what we are capable
of doing and not only in the Champion’s league. We have to put in a lot more
from now until the end of the season in the national league as well. Now we
have to clench our teeth and move forward both in the league and in the
Champions’. I am not just talking about tomorrow. Each week I see what
others are doing and what we are doing the fruits received some. There are
teams who have more points than we have and have done less that we have. When
we play for the Champions’ League we play at a high level but them we seem to
forget. We know what we are playing for from a sporting point of view, in
terms of prestige and economically. It does not matter what statements are
made, what really matters is what takes place in the training sessions and
above all on the field of play. We have to focus ourselves and create that
hunger to win otherwise we will have to bring more people to the table and so
that it is more difficult and one has to fight to get a morsel”.
“Inter is vulnerable if we do things right and a very difficult team if
we do not. I am not happy at the moment because there are many things in our
reach and we are letting them slip through our fingers. We recognise this fact
in private but then we do not do what we have to to resolve the situation.
Win or lose if we do our best I will be happy. I am sure we will give our all
against Inter. It is another thing if we get through to the semi-finals because
we are facing up to a great team. The drive we have in the Champion’s we
need in the national league as well, which is where were have to ensure out
participation in the Champions’ next season. This is a match of attitude and
intelligence”.
“I hurts me to see how we control matches, how we dominate but we do not
win. We strike time after time but we do not cause any damage and it has been
like that for the last year. There are things that should have been done and
were not. Probably I am the person responsible for no having taken advantage
of our achievements and have signed more players. I have had thousands of
personal conversations, called someone into line and taken disciplinary
action which have been effective at times and other times no. We have to prove
on the field of play that we are good enough to be in a Valencia CF that wants
to win titles and not in a Valencia that wants to classify for UEFA. You do
not have to try too hard to do that. The team has an exceptional level in the
Champions’ and a great level in other matches and even then sometimes we do
not win. We are the team with most shots on goal in the league. Although we
may have been mistaken in some signings we have to look for solutions. Last
year we steamrollered our opponents and we were unstoppable despite the fact
we could have been a little more effective. Now we continue having problems,
we have the same virtues but a few more defects”.
“We have suffered important injuries but the team is able to win. I am
very keen to stay in Valencia for the two remaining seasons in my contract
but there are others who have to demonstrate their desire to continue and
that they are able to do so. I am saying all this today because there is no
doubt in my mind that the players will give two hundred percent tomorrow.
There are eight matches left in the national league and we can do better,
if not we do not deserve to be there. If it is a problem of effectiveness
then we have to work harder at it. If we want to be a champion team we have
to show it more and do more so that we are not between fourth and sixth place
in the league. It is not a question of giving up on the league but assuming
the responsibility of being in Valencia. If we do not do so then we are no
better that any other team. At the end of the day, either we put in the same
intensity as last year or we will not achieve important objectives. We have
to renovate our dreams and if not we will have reassess who should be here at
all and not just sunbathing to be between sixth and fourth. I am absolutely
sure we are going to resolve the situation. In private they all recognise
this but we have to say it publicly. I am responsible for not having forced
this issue in the past. The players now have to demonstrate that they are
worthy to continue in Valencia”.
“There are some things that are evident in terms of effectiveness. You
have to continually work well. I told them a week ago that we are still in a
position to fight to be high up in the league. If we do not have that dream
then it will have to come from outside. If we do not improve our performance
or the manager will be changed or the players will be changed. Bad habits are
easily passed on. It is difficult to be there. A team like ours, with a much
smaller budget, has to be very motivated otherwise we will be between fourth
and sixth in the league. We have to give one hundred and ten percent because
with that kind of motivation we were league champions but with a sixty
percent effort we are fighting for fourth place. There are very valid players
in our dressing room, footballers with great personal and professional
qualities. But slackness is contagious and it makes us drop our guard. It is
not just words, it is not all lifting the cup for members of the press. The
manager may be mistaken but at the end of the day it is the player who is out
there on the field of play. We have a good squad but they have to pull
themselves together because we are losing grip on fourth place. Looking at
one another and patching over things is not going to get us anywhere”.
“It would be very foolish of us if we were not able to make amends. I
have no doubts we are going to give it a go but some of the ones who do not
push as much as the others are going to have to help. There are always groups
the difference is that it is results that reinforce the union. When you are
not winning it is all too easy to look at the manager, the directors or a
colleague. There are two months left and we either give our all or we cannot
go on. In 31 years there have been many managers with great reputations but
it has been this management team that were last years league champions with
this squad. Some maintain the dream and others contaminate because they do
not. It would be a mistake to maintain a player you have signed if he has not
given a good result. We have a fundamental Champion’s League match ahead of
us and we are able to win. I know I am strong, I believe in the dream and I
want to go on. We need people who believe to get results. This squad with
attitude can beat any team but if we do not give it our all you can see the
weaknesses in the group. I have never criticised my team. And I am not
criticising them now I am just saying that they have to demonstrate what they
want on the pitch. Inter is a vulnerable team and we can hurt them if we get
it right and have a little bit of luck on our side”.
