Vince: I can win in Jersey
BY FRANK ISOLA-DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
DENVER - Vince Carter seems to have little in common with Jason Kidd and
Alonzo Mourning. Not only was he here as an All-Star, but Carter also wants
to remain in New Jersey and help the Nets reach the playoffs.
"I'm happy with the way things have worked out," said Carter, who was traded
to the Nets two months ago. "I don't have any regrets. It's a new start as
well as an opportunity for me to revitalize who I am."
Carter, who had 11 points in 18 minutes in the East's 125-115 win last
night, spoke optimistically about reaching the playoffs, something he
hasn't done since 2001. The Nets are 23-30 and four games out of first
place in the Atlantic Division. However, 17 of their final 29 games will
be played at the Meadowlands.
"It's right there for the taking," Carter said. "I thrive for that type of
stage and atmosphere. It helps being on a team that has played on the level,
been to a Finals. Anything can happen if we get there. Just getting there is
the challenge."
SOUTHBOUND: New Orleans and Miami have applied for the 2007 All-Star Game.
The Hornets are regarded as a favorite because there are questions about
whether Miami can get the necessary convention space for the four-day weekend.
Charlotte, which moves into a new arena next season, will likely host the game
in 2009. Houston is next year's host.
HEAT UP HERB: Stan Van Gundy is impressed with how the Knicks have performed
under new coach Herb Williams.
"I think Lenny Wilkens is one of the best coaches ever, but for whatever
reason they've been playing a lot harder for Herb," said Van Gundy, who
coached the East last night. "They're playing with a lot more confidence,
which is a credit to him. They haven't been able to keep the same lineup
for a long time and I think people underestimate how important that is."
