March 22, 2004) -- The Toronto Raptors announced Monday that guard/forward
Vince Carter was named NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games
played Monday, March 15 through Sunday, March 21. This is the seventh time
Carter has won the honour in his career and second time this season, the last
being for the week of December 1-7, 2003.
Carter led the Raptors to a 2-1 record, posting averages of 32.0 points, 4.7
rebounds and 5.3 assists, while shooting .516 (33-64) from the field and
connecting on 23 of his 26 free throw attempts (.885). He scored 14 of his
team-high 24 points in the fourth quarter of an 85-81 win March 17 versus
Utah. He followed that performance with 30 points in a 96-91 loss to Chicago
at Air Canada Centre on March 19.
He finished his week Sunday with a game-best 42-point effort, including eight
points in overtime, tied a career high with 12 assists, and was 12-of-13 from
the free throw line in a 121-120 overtime win at New Orleans. It was the 13th
time that Carter recorded 40 or more points in his career and second time
this season.
Carter is averaging 22.3 points, ninth in the league, 4.9 assists, 1.17
steals and 37.6 minutes, all team highs for Toronto. He has led the team in
scoring 42 times and in assists on 29 occasions. Toronto plays at Memphis
tomorrow as part of its four-game road trip which continues to Houston on
Wednesday and concludes Friday at New York. Shaquille O’Neal of the Los
Angeles Lakers was named the NBA Western Conference Player of the Week.
