I've leveled to 76 mostly as demon using the metamorphosis ability as often as
possible to get a better feal for it. I do like the way it's looking now, and
I like the idea behind it (as I understand it), a temporary, very powerful
and durable form with exceptional DPS and isn't reliant upon our pet (which
can be weak at times), but it's currently difficult to justify the point spent.
As far as durability, demon form doesn't seem to improve this. In pvp gear
with demon armor up, I go from 4.4k armor (25%DR) to 15.2k armor (53.36% DR).
About 28% increase in DR, which sounds good, but considering I lose 5% from
the felguard MD & another 15% from soul link, it's not that great when you
consider I don't have a pet to help distract opponents in PvP or PvE. Not to
mention my magical DR just flat goes down.
The auto attack for the Meta form is currently affected by the DPS of my
equipped weapon. If I swap in a 91 DPS quest dagger for my main hand, the
auto attack hits quite a bit harder. I do not like this whatsoever. I would
prefer if the auto attack were to be made similar to a druid's feral weapon,
where it was just fixed damage, and the actual DPS of your weapon was
irrelevant. Also, it looks stupid to have the demon stabbing something with a
tiny dagger.
The attack power conversion is also very weak. At only 75%, this affords me
about 1000 attack power in demon form from my 1400 (1600 shadow) spell power.
This is far, far below the attack power of a comparable melee character. Even
more so if you compare to a feral druid (appropriate with the above change).
Demonic leap looks very cool. The ability can be quite useful too, whether to
close distance, stun or escape. However it is somewhat difficult to actually
target when used offensively. I've gotten better at it, but it's still
somewhat unwieldy. I would vastly prefer if this could be changed to either a
targeted ability (like charge) or used the targeting circle (like shadowfury).
No minimum range. Additionally, it would be nice if this ability could clear
snares off the warlock. If it's being used as an escape tool, being snare
free would give us some head start.
One nice aspect of demonic leap is the capacity to jump on top of, or over
obstacles. It would be extremely useful if this were improved somewhat. In
particular I'm thinking how useful it might be to leap from ground -> bridge
in Blade's edge Arena. Also nice is the ability to leap down from cliffs.
While not necessary, I hope this side effect is maintained, as it's quite fun
to use.
Immolation is very nice when it's active, and currently the only reason to
actually utilize form at all. It makes the demon form DPS pretty solid in
close AoE situations and not so bad in single target situations (it's still
not good compared to having the felguard out). However, for the 15 seconds
that the immolation aura is down, the demon form melee DPS becomes garbage.
Can the cooldown for this ability be reduced to 15seconds so that it can be
up constantly?
Howl of terror is not bad for what it does. However, it's currently linked to
our normal howl of terror, which puts that ability on a 3min cooldown. Why is
the cooldown for this ability 3min anyhow, is it not enough to just make it
45sec? This ability is also odd, as it's the only demon form ability that
actually requires mana to use.
The demon bolt is nice as an ability to have as ranged damage, although it
doesn't seem any stronger than our current shadow bolts. It's nice to use when
fearing enemies away from you with howl. However, the cast time still feels a
bit long (2.5sec currently), often times enemies will run out of range before
you're able to cast it. I tend to use it quite often because it is more
powerful than our currently weak melee attacks. If I'm being attacked, I'll
cast a demon bolt in between use of Demon Strike & Shadow Cleave. If not
attacked, there's no reason not to just spam this ability constantly while in
melee range (more powerful than trying to use the melee attack abilities at
all).
Demon Strike & Shadow Cleave both feel very weak. Shadow Cleave seems broken
because it's an on next strike type ability, but it does fixed damage. Even
if our normal melee was fixed to be decent, this ability will consume one of
our normal strikes to do fixed damage. That seems bad. Either way, if you
aren't currently subject to pushback, it doesn't seem wise to stop casting
your demon bolts to use these abilities. Even with pushback, it's questionable.
The attack cycle for demon form melee is very passive right now. Cleave +
Strike, wait 6 seconds and repeat. It would be nice if there were more active
attacks to utilize instead of pushing 2 buttons at the same time every 6
seconds.
Most actions break demon form currently, which is extremely detrimental.
Healthstones, potions, trinket use (PvP trinket included!), bandages, mounting,
and interaction with most quest items (the cog icon) all break us out of
demon form. It would be nice if that weren't so.
The loss of demonic pact (even though the demonic pact debuff is not actually
increasing damage of spells this build) will ultimately kill the form for
raid use. This debuff is likely to be one of the primary reasons to have a
demon lock in a raid. Losing this seems impossible for meta's raw DPS to
overcome. Meta's melee and special attacks need to apply the demonic pact
debuff for this form to even have a chance. To that end, the demonic knowledge
buff needs to remain active throughout Meta so as not to diminish the power
of demonic pact.
For PvP I have concerns that it may be too easy to kite the demon lock around,
as are most melee that lack snares (especially fast attacking ones). Demon
form would benefit greatly if it could snare (cripple?), or had a faster
movement speed (115%?). Or is the demon bolt ability meant to deal with this?
Conclusion:
For PvE, meta DPS will have to not only justify and surpass our own DPS with
the pet out, but that of Ruin in order to choose this talent. For PvP, we
lose every single ability that has ever been complained about (curses, dots,
pet abilities, soul link, drain life, drain mana, etc) and we open ourselves
up to additional forms of CC in order to do straight DPS with very little to
no utility. Either this form needs additional utility, or massive DPS to make
up for this loss. If this ability is not feared, this ability will not be used.
Currently the ability to spec felguard + siphon life + CoEX + shadow embrace
VASTLY outweighs anything past the felguard in demonology for PvP. In both
areas, the extra point spent on this form is not a good trade off at the
moment.
Additional Metamorphosis oddities:
Upon leaving the form, your pet is returned to you at full health, whether
you had it when you cast meta or not. While I assume the free pet resurrect
is a bug, it would be nice if the full heal (for the pet) was intended.
Attack power locks in at the beginning of the meta transformation. Pop a
trinket and switch to meta, and you'll see the extra AP granted by the
trinketed spell power remain, even after the trinket effect wears off.
Spell power from gear does not get added when equipping an item in demon form.
If I unequip -> re-equip my spell power dagger while in demon form, my spell
power remains as if I was not wearing the spell power dagger. I must wait till
demon form is over, then unequip->re-equip my dagger to restore my spell
power to normal. I do not know how this interacts with disarm.
Demonic Leap will often cause NPCs to disappear off my screen for a short time.
This seems to happen more often when I'm using this ability to escape from a
group, and even moreso when I use it indoors. I have not seen this in the
latest build, however, I've been primarily in a new area since then, and
primarily outdoors.
If I change back to human form in the middle of a Demonic Leap, your pet
despawns.
Haste makes Immolation tick faster and decreases the overall duration of the
ability.
If you level up while demon form is active, many of your talents will quit
working (you still have the points spent, but the effect is lost). This
includes Demonic Knowledge, improved corruption, bane, and demonic pact. To
regain your lost talents, you must head back to a trainer and unlearn them all
and replace the points in them.
When you go into demon form, you start big and scale down. When you leave,
you're small and scale up. I assume this is because it's using the much larger
Illidan model as the base. While not really gamebreaking or anything, it
looks kinda wonky.
