OUR Williams sisters by IVAN SPECK, Daily Mail Just like Venus and Serena Williams, they are close sisters who adore their tennis. Just like Venus and Serena, they have their birthdays in June and September. And just like the American superstars, the elder of the pair is quiet and dedicated while the younger is more outgoing. Oh and by the way, their name is Williams too. Introducing eight-year-old Zainab and six-year-old Maryam, Britain's own Williams sisters. They live in Basildon, Essex, with their Texan father Walle, his Jamaican wife Deborah and their one-year-old brother Ismail. Although Zainab and Maryam show undoubted promise, it is far too early to say whether they will become successful tennis players like their American idols. But 35-year-old Mr Williams admits that the parallels between his two little British girls and the women who dominated world tennis for years are startling. Zainab misses sharing a birthday with Venus in June by one day while Maryam was a September baby just like Serena. "Yes, I do find it strange," said Mr Williams, 35, a machine operator for a milk company who organises his shift work around his daughters' tennis education. "Everything just seems reminiscent of what Venus and Serena did. I said to my wife I didn't want to tell anybody about the birthdays because they would say it was all planned. It wasn't. It's all coincidence." In the case of Venus, 25, and Serena, 24, there was nothing accidental about their picking up a tennis racket. Richard Williams and his then wife Oracene planned the winning of Grand Slam trophies before Venus and Serena were even born. Nothing was left to chance as the girls grew up in the Los Angeles ghetto of Compton and practised their strokes with their father. 'They're super kids' But Walle Williams insists his daughters' progress is a surprise to him. "I never intentionally took Zainab to play tennis. I went to play with a friend and we just let her play with a ball on court. "Maryam started playing at two. In my opinion, she's even better than Zainab. A lot of coaches have said Maryam will be the better player." Mr Williams coaches the girls five days a week while every Friday morning the family drive to the academy run by Alan Jones - coach to British number one Elena Baltacha - in Winchmore Hill, North London. Jones said: "They're super kids. Well co-ordinated, well-rounded, fun, athletic and they move like tennis players. What we don't know yet is if they are going to enjoy competition. At this stage it appears so, but this isn't the real world. "But are they the right specimens? Emotionally yes, technically yes, physically yes. Have they got the right support behind them - and it's a joy to deal with such grateful parents - absolutely yes." The academy is financed to the tune of ?150,000 each year by French Connection founder Stephen Marks, a passionate tennis player. Mr Williams added: "The girls have improved in the few weeks they have been coming here. You can't rush the next step. The most important thing is the girls like the game and they want to play." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.57.95.193
