Blake brings in another star for cancer research fundraiser

Eight-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams will battle James
Blake in the feature match of the 2007 Anthem Live All-Star Tennis Event on
Dec. 6 at Old Dominion University's Ted Constant Center.
Williams will become the third tennis superstar to join Blake in Norfolk for
Anthem Live, which has raised more than $2.2 million for cancer research
since its inception. Andre Agassi took part in 2006, and Andy Roddick was the
featured opponent in 2005.
"It continues to amaze me that by partnering with Anthem and having my
friends agree to join me, we can truly make a difference by helping fund
research to find a cure for cancer," Blake said.
Blake again will dedicate the event to the memory of his father, Thomas, who
died of cancer in 2004.
The 2007 event also will feature a mixed doubles exhibition with Blake's good
friend and fellow touring pro Mardy Fish, and France's Tatiana Golovin, who
is ranked 18th in the world in women's tennis.
The event also will feature still-to-be-announced musical guests.
After Williams struggled through an injury-plagued 2006 that saw her ranking
drop out of the top 100, she stunned the tennis world in January, coming into
the Australian Open unseeded and seizing her eighth Grand Slam title.
A thumb injury has sidelined Williams most of the summer, but she is expected
to return to action at the U.S. Open, which begins Monday. Williams is the
tournament's No. 8 seed.
The 2007 Anthem Live will be Williams' second appearance at the cancer
research fundraiser. In 2004, she joined Jennifer Capriati for an exhibition
in Richmond.
Blake, whose recently released biography "Breaking Back" is No. 22 on the New
York Times best-seller list, is seeded sixth in the U.S. Open.
Tickets for Anthem Live go on sale Saturday and are available through Ted Tix
at constantcenter.com or at the Constant Center box office.

NEWPORT NEWS - Looking out at several dozen Peninsula kids awaiting her
appearance Thursday at An Achievable Dream Tennis Center, Serena Williams
reflected on her own youth.
"I remember I was sitting there in L.A. at something like this," said
Williams, 26, who has won eight Grand Slam singles championships. "Billie
Jean King was there and it really influenced me."
Dressed in a white warmup suit, looking conservative -- as she might on a
cold Wimbledon day -- Williams on Thursday became the latest guest star to
appear in the "Anthem Live!" charity festivities in Hampton Roads.

After a press conference, Williams and James Blake, fresh off his triumph
with the United States Davis Cup team, gave an encouraging talk to the
students from An Achievable Dream Academy and traded strokes with some of
them.
Then, Williams and Blake left from Norfolk, where they will play an
exhibition Thursday night in Old Dominion's Constant Center to benefit
Anthem's fight against cancer. It is the third consecutive December that
Blake -- who originated the idea in 2005 and selected Anthem and Norfolk as
the hosts -- has been part of the Dreamers' clinic and ODU exhibition.
Thursday night's plan is for Blake to face his buddy and countryman Mardy
Fish in a set, followed by Williams against French standout Tatiana Golovin
in a set. Elliott Yamin, a Richmond native of "American Idol" fame, then will
give a concert, and the four pros will return for a set of mixed doubles.
For fans wishing to attend at the last minute, tickets are available at (888

When Blake and a common friend, Carlos Fleming, requested her appearance,
Williams didn't hesitate to respond.
"I'm really involved in everything to do with philanthropy," said Williams,
whose Serena Williams Foundation benefits youth. "... "Also, I've never been
to Norfolk. It's also fun to come to cities where they have no (major pro)
tennis (tournaments) and try to showcase it."
Williams lauded Blake as an example of great sportsmanship. Blake takes the
fight against cancer personally, since his father died from it in 2004, and
has come back from serious injuries to become one of the world's best players.
"To go through some of the things he's gone through, and when you meet
someone like that who's such a good role model, it's a no-brainer to come out
and support it," she said.
Blake said he originally envisioned Anthem Live! as a one-time event when he
convinced Andy Roddick and musicians John Mayer and Gavin DeGraw to join him
at ODU in 2005. But last year, Blake returned and brought Andre Agassi with
him.
"I had so much fun, it was something that I couldn't stop doing," Blake said.
"My friends keep lining up to help out."
He joked, "One of these days I'm gonna run out of friends."

No brassy attitude. No ear-splitting grunting. No catsuit.

co-headliner of the fifth annual Anthem Live! tennis exhibition Thursday at

Jennifer Capriati and Anthem Live! for a charity exhibition in Richmond.

Afterward, she handed out pre-signed autographs, studying each child with a

It turns out the clinic reminded Serena of herself years ago, when she was

It is this Serena, the kinder, gentler version, that the star insists is the

The attention that comes with her style and skill, she said, is simply a
matter of people liking what they see.
