: Two of the world's biggest tennis stars, Andy Roddick and Serena Williams,
: will headline a unique sports and music event Dec. 13 in Columbia.
: Rock-n-Racquets, a tennis exhibition combining top-flight tennis with music,
: will make its first stop in South Carolina at the Colonial Life Arena.
: Roddick, ranked as the world's No. 6 male tennis player, started the event in
: 2002 as a way to combine his love of tennis and music. Proceeds benefit the
: Andy Roddick Foundation.
: Williams took part in Rock-n-Racquets in Omaha, Neb., last year and said
: Thursday she is excited about playing in South Carolina this winter.
: "It's a real successful event and I was excited with how it went," Williams
: said in a telephone interview. "Once I did it last year, I knew that I wanted
: to do it again. I also like the fact that we were going to different cities.
: There are fans all around. It's good to go show your support for people that
: have supported you."
: The event will feature Roddick taking on 6-foot-9 John Isner in a singles
: exhibition match. Williams, the defending U.S. Open champion with nine Grand
: Slam titles on her resume, will play Caroline Wozniacki, ranked No. 12 in the
: world.
Karlovic
: "She's up and coming," Williams said. "She's doing well. She had a breakout
: year this year. Next year she will be even better. It will be good to play
: against her and get a feel for her game."
: A mixed doubles exhibition, featuring Roddick and Williams against Isner and
: Wozniacki, also will be played.
VS Isner+Wozniacki
: Since the first Rock-N-Racquets in Miami in 2002, the event's mix of tennis
: and a DJ sound show has made tour stops in places such as Omaha, Little Rock,
: Ark.; Mobile, Ala.; Boise, Idaho and Wichita, Kan.
: Even though the event is being held at the basketball arena that houses the
: University of South Carolina's basketball teams, Newberry College is the
: primary sponsor for the Rock-n-Racquets S.C. stop.
: "Thanks to Newberry College," Roddick said in a press release, "it is
: especially exciting for me to bring the event to South Carolina where the
: tennis community and participation throughout the state are so strong."
: Tickets go on sale Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. at the Colonial Life Arena box office,
: online at coloniallifearena.com or by phone at (866) 472-8499.
: Most admission costs range from $17 to $87, but there are also $12 seats for
: students 12 and under. Military, senior citizen and group discounts are also
: available.
: Reach Wiseman at (803) 771-8472

Roddick serves tennis with a side of ham
Rock-n-Racquets plays to crowd
By C. Ray Hall
crayhall@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal
Surely some of the fans at Freedom Hall last night had seen Andy Roddick play
tennis.
Others, no doubt, had seen Serena Williams, his doubles partner, perform her
wonders on the court.
But few, surely, had seen a man try to close out a set by serving while
holding a potted poinsettia. With a ball boy tossing the ball.
That's what Roddick did when he and Williams led 5-4 over John Isner and
Caroline Wozniacki in the opening act of last night's exhibition.
The ball-boy ploy didn't work, so Roddick had Williams toss the ball on the
next point. One exchange later, Roddick -- still cradling the poinsettia with
his left arm -- hit a forehand past Wozniacki to close out the 36-minute 6-4
victory.
That set opened the ICAP Energy Rock-n-Racquets show, which also included
men's and women's singles. (Wozniacki defeated Williams 8-4; Roddick topped
Isner 8-4 in the nightcap.)
Rock-n-Racquets, brought to town by Jonathan Blue's sports-and-entertainment
enterprise, BEST, supports Roddick's foundation for at-risk children. The
show includes tennis, live and recorded music and a combination
emcee-umpire-narrator-provocateur named Wayne Bryan. (Sample patter: "John
Isner has been trying to get a date with Caroline Wozniacki the last three
years. He hopes to get lucky the next three nights.")
The four-player tour goes to Columbia, S.C., tonight and Knoxville, Tenn.,
tomorrow afternoon.
Before play, the players signed autographs in the arena's front concourse.
Soon the line grew to 150, snaking around a corner toward the concession
stand that specializes in pork chop sandwiches.
More than one female autograph seeker showed up with a Serena Williams doll
-- still in the original package, unopened. Some fans peered over the line to
sneak a peek at the stars; others held up their cell phones to shoot photos.
Ron Clark, a Hoosier, got a white cap autographed. The scrawls looked so
mysterious as to resemble doctor's signatures.
"I'm just glad they brought it here," Clark said of the event, "because
there's not much (pro) tennis here. You have to go to Indianapolis or
Cincinnati."
Clark's daughter, Katherine, the No. 1 singles player at Jeffersonville High
School, also got autographs. Being an exhibition match, Katherine said the
point was "just fun."
"Tennis should be fun," her dad said. "Not everybody can make $10 million
playing."
Roddick, wearing a white cap backward, certainly had fun, even when flailing
at a 137 mph serve from Isner.
Before the first salvo of the night -- a serve by the 6-foot-9 Isner --
Roddick had quipped, "Serena's never returned a serve from Sasquatch."
(Williams' return floated into the net; later, she actually aced Isner.)
The second point of the night produced a long, practically artful standoff,
with all four players at the net, firing grenades. When it finally ended, the
crowd exhaled and Roddick headed toward the exit, waving to the crowd and
yelling, "Good night! Thank you!"
He stuck around, of course, playing tennis and playing the crowd. When he
sprinted from baseline to baseline in a futile attempt to return a shot,
Williams cracked, "Venus (her sister) would've got it."
Looking winded, Roddick replied, "I wish I could argue."
During a long baseline exchange with Wozniacki, Roddick emitted a series of
high-pitched grunts, like Maria Sharapova. At one point he staged a John
McEnroe-like explosion over a lineswoman's call. Later, sensing the crowd had
grown a bit staid, he scolded the fans: "It's a little quiet. This is not
golf."
