Grand slam at the Gym

BARBADOS MARVELLED at the world's greatest on Saturday. Even if it was only
for an hour.
The Gymnasium of The Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey welcomed, wooed
and then wowed as 11-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and World No. 4
Caroline Wozniacki served out the first ever LIME Tennis Pon De Rock Festival
in a shortened, yet shot-filled historic exhibition.
It was the first match of its kind on Bajan soil - fittingly coming on the
eve of this country's 43rd year of Independence - featuring a current
top-ranked female professional pitted against a fellow top-five player.
And while two of tennis' finest weren't at their best, they were still more
than good enough for the 4 000 strong in attendance.
Dealing with the effects of the flu, the domineering Williams, 28, could only
manage to go one full set against her teenaged counterpart, who only recently
overcame a bout of injuries.
But the ensuing strokes played gave no indication of the pair's ailments.
Nor did the crowd's subsequent response.
Each point was followed with hearty applause, none more so than a pair of
Williams' trademark booming serves during her second service game.
Then there was the undoubted shot of the match, which was suitably the last
of the match as well.
On the only break point of the exhibition, Serena produced a stunner,
whipping a lusty forehand cross court past an unmoved Wozniacki at net to
give her a fitting 6-4 victory and a standing ovation.
"It was a 100 times better than my expectations," Williams said surprisingly
of the crowd support in the post-match Press conference.
"It felt good to play in front of the crowd [because] it was such a good
crowd. There was a lot of support for Caroline and a lot of support for me so
it was good."
That support was evident long before world champion hurdler Ryan Brathwaite
even got a chance to flip the coin toss, as scores of Bajans lined the
Gymnasium's outer walls some five hours ahead of the scheduled start for
their featured exhibition.
It was well worth the wait.
The flamboyant Williams got the ball rolling after easily holding at love in
the first game before Wozniacki came up with a spectacular swinging backhand
volley to capitalise on a similarly comfortable hold.
Both traded service games from there, exchanging a couple of winners from
either side among some uncharacteristic unforced errors.
Those mishits didn't matter much to the crowd - which included international
performing artist Common, wife of Prime Minister David Thompson, Mara
Thompson, Minister of Sport Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo and Opposition Leader Mia
Mottley - not when they could spend the time chanting both players' names.
"It was an amazing crowd and it's always fun to play Serena," noted the
19-year-old Wozniacki.
"I had a lot of supporters out there."
The game seemed headed to a certain tiebreak when Wozniacki was up 40-30 on
her serve while trailing 4-5, but an ensuing backhand error cost her game
point before Williams came up with the type of shot that has given her more
career earnings than any other sports woman in history.
Seemingly in control of the point, the fast approaching Dane could only watch
at net as Serena produced yet another of her trademark forehand passing shots
that landed just inside the tramline.
"She's isn't No. 1 by fluke," commented Wozniacki.

Lewis, Wozniacki win doubles match

BARBADIAN Haydn Lewis and Dane Caroline Wozniacki teamed up to win their
exhibition match 8-6 against Serena Williams and Jeff Tarango at the Sugar
Hill Tennis Resort yesterday.
The match, which lasted about 43 minutes and was part of the LIME Tennis Pon
De Rock series, ended in style with a shot from Lewis that Williams was
unable to return.

My Days in Barbados
Hi Everyone,
Now that I am back from Barbados, I thought you might like to hear about my
trip. I spent 10 days there with my parents and my brother Patrick. We stayed
at one of the most exclusive and beautiful resorts of the world, the Sandy
Lane Hotel. We had the owner’s 5-bedroom penthouse suite with a butler and
full time security. The suite was over 3000 square-feet, with a big jacuzzi
in the living room. It was nothing short of amazing. The Sandy Lane Hotel has
to be the nicest, most excusive hotel I have ever stayed at.
我從Barbados回來了 我跟家人在那邊待了十天 我們住的飯店是全世界最豪華的之一

As I have mentioned in my last blog entry, I was in Barbados to play a
one-weekend exhibition with my friend, Serena Williams. I have to admit, it
went incredibly well; I was impressed with the job the promoter, Kodi Lewis
and his team has done. They organized the exhibition for the 1st time, and I
think this was the best 1st exhibition I ever participated in.

Serena and I had a great time; we played in front of 4000 people in the main
gym in Bridgetown on Saturday. The crowd was loud and I could tell that they
were really excited to have Serena and myself there, which I am grateful for.

I am glad I got to spend some time with Serena not only this past weekend,
but over the past few years; and might add that we became pretty close

already legendary career. All young tennis players, including myself, owe a
great deal to Venus and Serena for doing such a wonderful job promoting not
only women’s tennis but women’s sports in general.

On Sunday, I joined Serena, Jeff Tarango and the #1 player from Barbados,
Hayden Lewis in playing the 2nd exhibition in the Sugar Hill Tennis Village.
This absolutely spectacular tennis-only club is owned by John and David
Lloyd. We played mixed doubles in front of 400 VIP guests; I partnered with
Hayden to beat Serena and Jeff in a very fun pro-set.

Other than that, I spent my time mostly on court training. I would like to
send a special thanks to Hayden, who has been my hitting partner in Barbados;
I appreciate your help. When I didn’t practice, me and my family were just
hanging out on the beach. Patrick and I went out sailing on a boat but what I
enjoyed the most is riding the jet-ski. Altogether, it was a great trip, and
I miss Barbados already.

I’m now in Copenhagen, staying with my brother in his new apartment. I will
be training and spending time with some of my girlfriends in town. Next
Tuesday, I am flying to Herzo, Germany for a day to meet some of the Stella
McCartney designers in the Adidas Headquarters. The new Stella McCartney
tennis clothing line is coming out soon, and I am very excited to be able to
offer some input regarding the new line. I love fashion, and meeting the
fabulous designers of Stella McCartney and Adidas is something to look
forward to.
我現在回到Copenhagen 跟我的哥哥住在他的新公寓裡
我會開始練球 還有花一些時間跟我的朋友們出去
下個禮拜二我會飛到德國的Herzo去跟Stella McCartney的一些設計師開會
新的球衣快出爐了 很開心能夠對新系列提供一些自己的想法
我喜歡時尚 跟這些傑出的設計師見面是我非常期待的
