Tennis professionals band together for charity in Palm Beach Gardens
By Andrew Abramson
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
PALM BEACH GARDENS —
When Ira Peskowitz began the Kids and Police Tennis Association in June 2010,
he never imagined that his organization for at-risk kids would grow so much
in two years that he’d have an all-star lineup of current and former tennis
players lining up to raise money.
But on Sunday at the BallenIsles tennis courts, the Police Athletic League
program rose to new heights when seven-time Grand Slam singles winner Venus
Williams, Danish star and former No. 1 player Caroline Wozniacki and former
top 10 tennis star Brenda Schultz-McCarthy joined other local and national
female tennis players to challenge a group of men to doubles, including
former Top 10 1970s star Dick Stockton.
The women earned a 60-52 win against the men, but more importantly, helped
raise money for the rising tennis program.
“It’s awesome because it’s nice to effect where you live,” said Williams,
a BalenIsles resident. “It’s good to see the young people playing, and it’
s important for them in their lives.”
This marked the third year the event was held at BallenIsles. But while the
previous matches featured a couple of stars including Williams and her sister
Serena, this was the first time that numerous players joined forces.
“It shows how great these tennis legends are to come out on their own time
and help grow a cause,” said Peskowitz, a deputy sheriff for the Palm Beach
County Sheriff’s Office and and a former collegiate tennis player.
Players from both teams subbed in and out of the match and allowed
up-and-comers to participate, including 13-year-old Kacey Moore who is part
of the Kids and Police Tennis Association and is ranked 40th in her age group
in the USTA Junior Ranking.
“It’s amazing for (the other kids) and me,” Moore said. “It’s a great
experience and something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I’m sure
they will, too.”
While the match was a homecoming for Williams, who barely had to leave her
front door, Wozniacki said she will also be frequenting the BallenIsles
tennis courts.
Wozniacki’s boyfriend, 23-year-old top-ranked world golfer Rory McIlroy,
closed on a $9.5 million waterfront mansion in unincorporated north county
near Prosperity Farms Road, according to Jeff Lichtenstein, a real estate
agent in Palm Beach County who blogs about area listings.
“Rory is going to spend a lot of time here, and of course I’m going to come
visit,” Wozniacki said. “And when I’m here, I’m going to practice (at
BallenIsles) which is a great facility.”
Sunday’s event was free for BallenIsles residents but the organizers
encouraged donations to the Kids and Police Tennis Association.
Wozniacki said she’d like to continue charitable causes in the area.
“To do something for a good cause in this area is definitely nice and it’s
going to make a difference,” she said.
