THE talk has her career on the slide, but Venus Williams showed last night she
still has what it takes after surviving a tough first-round assignment.
There was a bit of the Williams of old at times at Vodafone Arena, with the
former world No. 1 proving too strong for Greece's Eleni Daniilidou and
winning 6-1 7-5 in a much-needed confidence boost.
After a disappointing 2004 where she didn't progress past the quarter-finals
at any of the slams, Williams' ranking slipped to No. 9 and had many
predicting that it would keep going south.
However, the 24-year-old has arrived in Melbourne determined to re-ignite her
career and she was relieved after getting over the dangerous Daniilidou who
came to the Open ranked 34.
Williams raced through the first set in just 23 minutes but struck serious
problems in the second when her serve was broken twice.
After getting the early break Williams surrendered the advantage immediately
and then, after breaking Daniilidou again, she failed to serve out the match
at 5-4.
That embarrassing slip seemed to stir her back into action and she broke the
Greek straight back and then didn't lose a point on serve to secure the win.
