Serena Williams Finds New Doubles Partner in Roddick

MELBOURNE, Australia — Though she is without her sister Venus in Melbourne,
Serena Williams has found a new doubles partner for the Australian Open: her
longtime friend Andy Roddick.

“Book it, it’s real!” she posted on Twitter upon announcing the agreement
to play mixed doubles in Australia. The two had previously announced their
intentions to partner with each other in the new mixed-doubles event at the
London Olympics this summer.

Williams, who has won 12 Grand Slam doubles titles with her sister, has not
played competitive mixed doubles since the Hopman Cup in 2008, winning the
team competition with Mardy Fish. Early in her career, Williams played mixed
doubles at the four major events frequently, and with considerable success,
winning Wimbledon and the United States Open in 1998 with the Belarussian Max
Mirnyi. After she won her maiden Grand Slam title at the 1999 United States
Open, however, Williams restricted her Slam workload to singles and sporadic
women’s doubles with Venus.

“I think it will be really fun,” Williams said of the partnership with
Roddick.
“I actually practiced next to Andy, but we were both so focused on our
singles practice that I didn’t even get to talk to him too much today.
“I hit the worst volley today and I was a little worried. I was like, ‘He
might want to get a new partner.’ We’ll see how it goes.”

Roddick has not played doubles of any kind at a Grand Slam event since
Wimbledon in 2001, and he has never played mixed at a sanctioned tournament.
His only experience playing the format has come in World TeamTennis and
exhibition matches.
Roddick從2001之後就沒在大滿貫沒過雙打了 也從來沒參加過混雙

“I think it will be fun,” Roddick said Sunday. “I want to be sure to do
over the next couple years some of the things that I’ve always wanted to but
haven’t been able to do. Serena and I have been friends for a really long
time.”
Roddick說: "我覺得一定會很好玩 接下來這幾年我想做一些

Shortly before Williams announced their Australian Open partnership on
Twitter in September, Roddick tweeted a photo of himself and Williams, a
27-time Grand Slam champion, with the message, “I love this girl.”

Asked if she was in the mixed-doubles tournament to win it, Williams replied
in the affirmative, grinning. “I am,” she said. “And he better be.”
