Serena Williams defeats Gisela Dulko
2nd Round
6-3, 6-4
AMY BINDER: Questions for Serena, please.
Q. Serena, do you wish you had fireworks every time you won a match?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I do wish I had fireworks every time I won a match. I love
fireworks.
Q. She pushed you kind of hard. What was noteworthy about her game?
SERENA WILLIAMS: You know, she had a lot of variety. Like she would hit a
winner and then she would hit really soft balls, and then she'd hit a drop
shot and a slice. She has a lot of variety in her game.
Q. Early on it seemed like you were struggling with your serve. You kind of
got your rhythm when you were on the other side with the ball. Why do you
think that was?
SERENA WILLIAMS: You know, I got a slow start in general today. So it was
just -- you know, it's cold out and it was just a late match, so those are
just excuses that I'm giving myself as to why I served bad.
Q. Were you happy that you've been able to stick around a little longer than
you did last year?
SERENA WILLIAMS: And the grand finale! (Fireworks finale). We should be
watching this. I'm definitely glad that I stuck around longer this year than
last year. You know, I really want to be around a long time this year.
Q. Do you find it tougher competing when you've got fan members in the crowd
or do you get along like that?
SERENA WILLIAMS: You know, sometimes it's the same to me. Sometimes it's
tougher, but you know, it makes me want to win more.
Q. How were the conditions tonight? It was a little chilly out there, but as
far as conditions go.
SERENA WILLIAMS: At least it wasn't windy. I think I'd rather play in the
cold than the wind, but it got really, really cold in the second set. Like my
body kind of froze, and I'm still in that frozen position right now. So I'm
really cold. I'm from Florida, you know, it's really hot there.
Q. Serena, I've read several articles lately about how they say you're in
some of the best condition of your career. Do you agree and what have you
been working on?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah. I definitely feel that I'm in better shape, but for
longevity instead of just a short time, you know, I feel like every day I
work, you know, to keep fit and to lengthen my career.
Q. Just overall feelings about the match, you know, your confidence going
into the next?
SERENA WILLIAMS: You know, I just feel like it's good to win this match. I
don't feel like I played great on any level. I'm just glad it's over, to be
honest, because I want to go to bed. (Laughs).
AMY BINDER: Anything else?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Thank you.
