Venus Blasts Away Maria to Reach Final
Thursday, June 30, 2005
Venus Williams - a two times Wimbledon champion - has defeated defending
champion Maria Sharapova to reach the ladies' singles final.
The American outplayed the Russian with blistering ground strokes to take the
match 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 after rain delayed the start of play.
The win means the 25-year-old will be making her fifth appearance in a
Wimbledon final since she lifted the title for the first time in 2000.
"I was so excited to be playing on Centre. I love this tournament," she said
immediately after the match. More soon.
