Venus Williams withdraws from Rogers Cup

Venus Williams announced today that an injured knee will force her to miss
the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank. She also withdrew from last week's
Premier event in Cincinnati.
"I regret not being able to play in Montreal next week, " said Venus
Williams. "I was very much looking forward toplaying in Montreal for the
first time but the pain that I am experiencing in my knee has unfortunately
not goneaway. I appreciate the support of the tournament organizers and
Montreal fans.
"As a result, 40 of the Top 45 players in the world will be at Uniprix
Stadium from August 13-22 to compete in theRogers Cup presented by National
Bank."Obviously this is disappointing, but we will still have one of the most
impressive player fields in years," saidTournament Director Eugène Lapierre.
"With Jelena Jankovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Elena Dementieva, KimClijsters,
Francesca Schiavone, Maria Sharapova and our Quebecers led by Aleksandra
Wozniak, the fans aregoing to be treated to quite a show and and it promises
to be a heated battle for this year's Rogers Cup crown.
