Maria also withdrew due to a low back strain. Serena is still troubled by a
injured left ankle which she incurred last April in the quarterfinals of the
Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island, Florida. The injury caused
Serena to miss the French Open. After losing in the 3rd round at Wimbledon in
June, Serena said that the injury had been a hairline fracture, and that is
was still troubling her, although it was not the cause of her defeat.
