Was it an easy match for you today?
It sure was--I think I was in control this afternoon!
How do you feel about your backhand?
I think it was better than yesterday. For a few minutes it was weaker, but I
think I gave what it took.
Do you remember when you played against Emilie Loit?
I sure do, the match lasted three hours (laughter)! It was an incredible and
difficult match we played. Really very exciting. (Ed. Serena Williams
defeated Emilie Loit in the 1st round of the 2003 Australian Open with a
score of 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 in over two hours of play. The Frenchwoman was only
three points away from victory.)
What exactly do you remember about it?
I remember that the first set was sort of tough...(She takes a minute to
think) Actually, I especially remember that it was really long. (Laughs) It
was a good memory.
Emilie Loit isn't your average player, she has a different game than the
others. What do you think she has to offer?
She varies her game a lot, she is really dynamic, and with all her
experience, it should be a very interesting match.
Emilie Loit practices not far from here, so she really feels at home. What
might make the crowd support you more than her?
I don't know. She's French, you know, so it's natural that the audience backs
her up.
Do you think that speed will be the key tomorrow?
Well, I don't have the secret to any match, but when it gets too slow, I
don't feel very comfortable. So, yes, it had better be fast-paced!
