ITF chief: Serena faces 'significant' fine

REGGIO CALABRIA, Italy -- Top-ranked Serena Williams will most likely receive
a "significant" fine but no suspension for her U.S. Open tirade, the
president of the International Tennis Federation said.

Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock is expected to give his recommendation
to the Grand Slam committee, which probably will announce the sanction Monday
or Tuesday.

"I don't think [an Australian Open ban] would make much sense, because it
would penalize the people handing out the punishment," Francesco Ricci Bitti
told The Associated Press on Saturday. "For the Grand Slam committee to
exclude her from a Grand Slam doesn't seem likely."

The Grand Slam committee is composed of Ricci Bitti and the four Grand Slam
presidents.

Williams was fined $10,000 after her profanity-laced outburst at a lineswoman
during her semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters in September. A fine from the ITF
could be much greater.

"A significant financial penalty makes much more sense. But it has to be
significant enough for the fans [to appreciate] it," Ricci Bitti said. "Of

Ruling on Serena's US Open Tirade Expected Soon

REGGIO CALABRIA, Italy (AP) -- A ruling on Serena Williams' U.S. Open tirade
is expected in the next two weeks.

''It's in the hands of the Grand Slam administrator, who I believe has now
completed his investigation and will be making a ruling within the next two
weeks,'' United States Tennis Association President Lucy Garvin told The
Associated Press on Friday. ''That's what we have been told -- that Serena
would hear, we would hear.''

The Grand Slam administrator is Bill Babcock.

"目前全案在大滿貫行政官手中 現在應該已經完成調查 接下來的兩週應該會做出結果"

Williams was fined $10,000 after her profanity-laced outburst at a lineswoman
during her semifinal loss to Kim Clijsters in September, and she could face a
more severe penalty in the coming weeks.

''We really have not gone down that path of making a judgment as to what

definitely the right thing to do.''

Serena Williams cash hit

SERENA Williams faces the prospect of being hit with the largest fine in
tennis history when she is penalised for her behaviour at the US Open.

Industry sources yesterday indicated the International Tennis Federation's
grand slam committee was close to reaching consensus on the Williams case,
almost 12 weeks after the incident.

Williams has been cited under the sport's code of conduct for committing a
major offence, an infraction that carries possible suspension from January's
Australian Open.

Williams allegedly threatened to kill a lineswoman in New York, saying: "If I
could. I would take this f---ing ball and shove it down your f---ing throat."
The winner of 11 majors, Williams almost certainly will be allowed to contest
the Australian Open, where she is the defending champion.

But she is likely to receive a fine that far outstrips the $US100,000 Lleyton

ITF grand slam administrator Bill Babcock has completed his investigation,
taking evidence and submissions from Williams and the officials directly
involved on the day.

the grand slam committee. Geoff Pollard (Australian Open), Jean Gachassin
(French), Tim Phillips (Wimbledon) and Lucy Garvin (US) will meet to assess

Babcock's verdict.

Officials could ban Williams from next season's US Open or strip her of the
$372,000 singles prizemoney and 900 rankings points.
There are suggestions a $1 million fine could be levied, along with a good
behaviour bond.

Williams was fined the maximum on-site penalty of $10,850 in New York for
unsportsmanlike behaviour. The outburst was triggered by a suspect foot-fault
call in her semi-final against Belgian Kim Clijsters. Williams has apologised
several times for the incident.

Officials are expected to release the Williams decision after next week's
Davis Cup final in Barcelona.
