A Post-Match Interview With:
VENUS WILLIAMS
Eugenie Bouchard defeats Venus Williams
7-67, 2-6, 6-4
Third Round
DANNY KENDALL: We'll take first question for Venus, please.
Q. Just quickly after the match, but what was the difference out there?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah, I know. She played a lot more consistently than I did.
I think my errors really hurt me a lot today, just a lot of up and down, a
lot of errors.
Q. Can you talk a little bit about that first-set tiebreaker? Obviously you
had the two set points. Talk a little bit about how she got those from you.
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah, I mean just kind of came from behind the whole set and
then got in position to win the set, and you know, she played tough, stayed
in the points, and you know, I started making errors again, which didn't help.
Q. How proud are you of your effort this week to make it this far deep into
the third set against a tough player like that, and your third match out
there, clearly not feeling 100 percent, I guess, this week?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah. It's been really tough. Just, you know, don't have the
endurance this week, so I think that contributed to my errors and just kind
of wanted to make the points shorter a lot of the times, and just made some
bad choices or my legs would stop.
So that kind of made it more challenging. I mean I think normally I would
probably be able to challenge the points a little bit longer and just make
her play more shots and just be more willing to play longer points.
So you know, I hope we can meet again under better circumstances for me.
Q. Match point last shot, you hit the drop shot, had her pushed back. I was
wondering what you were thinking on that shot. Not a normal play for you.
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah. It's gone now. What am I supposed to do?
Q. What's your plan for clay season? Do you know your schedule yet?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah. Just the regular, the usual suspects, Madrid, Rome,
French.
Q. And Fed Cup? Yes? No, maybe so?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I'm not in the Fed Cup at the moment, no.
Q. I know you spoke yesterday about advice you have for younger players. Just
wondering for someone like Eugenie that's getting so much attention, just
coming sort of like an "it" girl. What sort of advice would you give on
navigating this stage of her career as a teen female?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I don't know. I think she'll figure it out. I don't think she
needs my advice. She'll be all right.
Thanks, guys.
