An interview with:
SERENA WILLIAMS
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. You won a tournament on Sunday. You're coming here as defending
champion. To win that decisively in your first match, is that a sign of just
how well you're playing now?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It's definitely a sign of me I've just been working on
some things, working hard. Hopefully they'll come together. I've just been
waiting.
Q. You seem to be very happy with the reaction of the crowd at the end of
the game. Is that so?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I've been really happy. It's been a really long time since
I've been here. It's really great to see.
I'm really happy to be a part of the tournament this year. It's just really
cool.
Q. Can you tell everybody how you made your French so good. Everybody was
blown away on court. The reaction was tremendous. They were surprised and
impressed I think.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, no, I was really happy. I've actually been studying
French for most of my life. So, yeah, I should be able to speak even better,
to be honest.
I love it in Canada because I understand everything. It's a lot easier for
me to speak. The accent is much easier for me to understand.
Q. You had a little bit more problems with your first serve in the second
set. How do you explain it?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don't know. I think my toss was a little everywhere. I
think I wasn't as relaxed as I wanted to be.
But there's always room for improvement. Always keep that in mind, that I
can continue to improve. So that's one thing that I definitely want to work
on.
Q. Your next opponent, Safarova, you're 6 0 against her. Is she just
somebody that you know how to play especially well or...
SERENA WILLIAMS: She is an interesting player. She's extremely tricky. I
don't know how I got to be 6 0 against her because she plays really well.
We've had some tough matches. I know we've gone to three sets on occasions.
It's definitely not an easy match for me. I look forward to it. I'm going
to have to be ready. She's so motivated and she's playing really well.
THE MODERATOR: Question in French.
Q. What is your secret for being able to come back so strongly even after
difficult moments?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It was difficult for me today but I was very focused on my
game. She beat me in a Grand Slam, so I knew it was not going to be simple.
But I was able to remain focused.
