Patty Schnyder vs. a qualifier and Timea Bacsinszky vs. Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy - these are the first round matches for the two Swiss players currently confirmed for the main draw of the Swisscom Challenge 2004.
Martina Hingis, Patty Schnyder und Timea Bacsinszky, who all assisted in the draw ceremony at the "World of Sports" in Jelmoli Zurich, performed their roles as "Lady Luck" perfectly: the bottom half of the draw at the Swisscom Challenge is packed like never before. The new world number 1 Lindsay Davenport, Wimbledon Champion Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams and Patty Schnyder make it four well-known and popular players all in the same half - a truly tough half of the draw. Only two of these players will
make it to the semifinals. Serena Williams, who was also drawn for the bottom half of the table, had to withdraw from the tournament at short notice due to an ongoing problem with her left knee.
But the top half of the table is also anything but easz. The top seeded Amelie Mauresmo lies in wait, as does Elena Dementieva, a finalist in two Grand Slams this year, or other Russian power players like Vera Zvonareva and Nadia Petrova.
