ATHENS - Serena Williams the gold medalist in the women's doubles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, has withdrawn from the 2004 Summer Games. Williams has been suffering from a left knee injury, which had forced her to withdraw from tournaments in San Diego and Montreal. She is ranked 11th in the world and has won one tournament this year, capturing the Nasdaq 100 in early April. She lost to talented Russian 17-year-old Maria Sharapova in this year's Wimbledon final. Australian Samantha Stosur, who is currently ranked 96th in the world, will replace Williams in the singles draw. Williams became the second high-profile American to pull out of the Olympics in as many days, joining Jennifer Capriati, who withdrew on Tuesday. Capriati pulled out due to a nagging right hamstring injury that has plagued her since last month. Lisa Raymond will replace Capriati in the singles draw. Serena's sister, Venus Williams, is still entered in the singles competition for the Olympics, along with Chanda Rubin and Raymond for the United States. Raymond will pair with Martina Navratilova in doubles. Venus and Serena teamed to win the doubles title in the 2000 Summer Games with Venus winning the singles competition. The United States has won the singles at the last three Olympics with Lindsay Davenport capturing the title in 1996 and Capriati in 1992. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 203.187.49.76
