World No.1 Davenport advanced to the quarterfinals with a straight sets victory against Chinese qualifier Jie Zheng, while Williams needed three sets to escape Russia's Elena Bovina, 16 61 64. Despite some troubles with the windy conditions, Davenport was able to breeze through the first set. In the second, Zheng built a 5-3 lead but couldn't hold on as the American grabbed the final four games of the match. "I struggled a lot on one side of the court," Davenport said. "The wind was really tricky. I felt I made some errors and rushed some games, and she got some balls back and was aggressive at times and at other times she made errors. "But I felt like when I concentrated and played more aggressive tennis then I played well. It was a good match to play." Davenport's quarterfinal opponent will be a rematch of this year's Australian Open first round when she faces Spanish wild card Conchita Martinez, who upset No.7 seed Nathalie Dechy, 61 62. Though she yielded just three games to the Frenchwoman, it took Martinez 90 minutes to complete the straight sets victory. The match featured a number of long rallies, including the second game of the match, which stretched to 28 points before the Spaniard broke on her fourth break point. It will be the 17th time Davenport and Martinez have met on court and the second this year. Both players have each won eight times with Davenport taking the last two matches - including a 61 60 victory this year in Melbourne. Williams' first set in Dubai is one she will most likely hope to forget, which included winning just one of the set's first nine points. However, the Australian Open champion was able to reduce her errors and attack the ball more in the second set to even the match. In the third, Williams held a 4-0 lead before Bovina staged a late comeback before the American finally prevailed. "It was really windy and all my shots were just out of here," Williams said. "I wasn’t used to the conditions and the ball was out and hitting the fence and I had to kind of gather myself. "When I won the second set I was really relaxed and at peace with myself, and then I just got a little too anxious in the third and was missing a few shots." Williams will see Daniela Hantuchova as her quarterfinal opponent after the Slovak player reached the final eight with a 75 64 victory against Elena Likhovtseva. Hantuchova, who upset No.6 seed Alicia Molik in the first round, is into the quarters for the second straight week after making it all the way to the semifinals last week in Doha. After a surprising second round loss last week in Doha, No.3 seed Anastasia Myskina was given a bit of a break in her first match at Dubai when opponent Marion Bartoli was forced to retire midway through the first set with a tendonitis in her left patella. Myskina suffered her earliest loss of the season last week at the Qatar Total Open, falling to Conchita Martinez. After jumping out to a 4-2 lead on Wednesday, Bartoli said she would not be able to continue the match due to the swelling in her left knee. The loss by Bartoli, a qualifier this week, is the third time already this season that the 20-year-old Frenchwoman has been forced to retire during a match. In Canberra, Bartoli retired in the quarterfinals due to problems with her hamstrings. She was also forced to retire in the second round at Pattaya City due to a stomach illness. Myskina will next face No.8 seed Patty Schnyder, a 63 76(8) winner against dangerous Chinese qualifier Na Li. Schnyder and Li played a back-and-forth match with the Swiss player winning the first three games of the match, losing the next three and then winning three more to close out the first set. In the second, Li came out ahead by building a 5-2 lead before Schnyder again put together a string of three straight games to level the set at 5-5. In a lengthy tie-break, Schnyder held off two sets points before capturing the match on her third match point. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.167.140.203 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.63.100.74
