Venus Williams (USA)
Scheduled to play at Stanford, San Diego and Toronto

Former No.1 Venus Williams came alive this year at Wimbledon, claiming her
fifth career Grand Slam singles title with consecutive wins over defending
champion and world No.2 Maria Sharapova and current No.1 Davenport in the semi-
finals and final respectively. The 25-year-old, who is 29-8 on the season, has
been a dominant force during the summer hardcourt swing over the years,
claiming the Stanford title twice, the San Diego title three times, and the New
Haven title for four straight years between 1999 and 2002. Although Williams
did not win any hardcourt titles last year, she did reach the final at Stanford
and the semifinals at Los Angeles.

Serena Williams (USA)
Scheduled to play at San Diego, Los Angeles and Toronto

Another former No.1, Serena Williams will look to turn her season around this
year during the US Open Series. Williams started the year off strongly,
claiming her seventh career Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open
with clutch wins in the later rounds over Amelie Mauresmo, Sharapova and
Davenport, but has been plagued with injuries to her shoulder and left ankle
ever since. Her best result since her triumph in Melbourne has been a semifinal
finish at Dubai. The 23-year-old, who is 17-5 this season, has enjoyed lots of
success in the summer swing, winning at Los Angeles in 1999 and 2000, and
claiming the Toronto title in 2001. Last year, her best result on the hardcourt
swing was a runner-up finish to Davenport at Los Angeles. Williams withdrew
from this year's Bank of the West Classic in Stanford as she continues recovery
from her ankle injury but is still scheduled to compete in San Diego, Los
Angeles and Toronto.
