Maria Remains Hopeful, Venus Out in Toronto
August 12, 2005 - Maria Sharapova remains hopeful she will play at the Rogers
Cup presented by American Express Aug 13-21 at the Rexall Centre in Toronto.
After withdrawing from this week’s JP Morgan Chase Open in Los Angeles due
to a right pectoral muscle strain, the injury is day to day.
“Maria’s first match at the Rexall Centre will likely not happen before
Wednesday evening,” said Stacey Allaster, Rogers Cup Tournament Director . “
We hope that this late start will maximize our chances of having our fans see
a rested and healthy Maria Sharapova perform in Toronto.”
However, Wimbledon champion Venus Williams will be unable to play in Toronto
while still battling the flu. Williams has been unable to practice since her
withdraw from a tournament in Stockholm, Sweden, last week.
“Venus will be missed here in Toronto, but injuries and illnesses are part
of sport,” said Tournament Director Stacey Allaster. “Fortunately for the
tennis fans in this city, the Rogers Cup still has a very deep field.”
The main singles draw takes place at the Rexall Centre on Saturday, August
13, at 2:00 p.m.
