Venus Williams defeats Yung-Jan Chan
6-2, 6-1
Round of 16
AMY BINDER: Questions for Venus, please.
Q. Just talk about the match generally, Venus.
VENUS WILLIAMS: I think this is probably my best match this week. I felt
really good on my return of serve. I think I put a lot of pressure on her
serve because of that, and when she tried to take some pace off her first
serve, then I really had a good chance to look at the ball and place it well.
So it was nice, especially with the conditions being windy.
Q. Did you break a sweat today?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah. For sure. It's hard work out there, and there is some
long rallies, and I think what was important is that the important points and
the rallies that were long I was able to win most of those. So I think it put
a lot more pressure on her, because she's a good player. She hits a lot of
pace on the ball when you give her a chance and she knows how to tough it
out. So I had to just keep her outside the game the best I could.
Q. I know you won at Memphis and have played well elsewhere this year. Is
this, though, about as well as you've played or not quite yet? I mean this
year.
VENUS WILLIAMS: The only thing is that I probably was serving a little better
at Memphis. Other than that, I would definitely say I'm much speedier. My
speed is a lot better. My volleys are better. Memphis was a good week for me,
but I lost a little bit of momentum because I was off for another four weeks
after that, so I'm just gaining momentum with every tournament.
Q. Would you say you're gaining more confidence with your blowout victories
versus having to struggle or come from behind or having close matches?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I think that every match and every point builds character,
and it's important to take the positive and obviously understand what you
didn't do right, but focus on the positive things, and I like to be positive
going into each match, so the easier wins are great because it helps me,
because it's a long week.
Q. A lot of players have talked about gaining momentum in a tournament like
this. Do you feel like yours is really starting to snowball a little bit?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I'd love to -- yeah. It's a great idea. (Laughs). I really
play so many tournaments in a row, and for me I just want to play right now.
If there was a tournament next week, I'm playing Fed Cup, but if there was a
tournament, I'd probably enter that one, too, because I've just been off so
long and I'm eager to play, and I'm eager to get my ranking up, and I want to
play matches, so I'm excited about the snowball effect.
Q. How do you like your chances now that you're into the quarters here?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I think that every of round I get closer to the title. That's
where it is. I'd love to take it home, but obviously I'm focusing on the
quarters.
AMY BINDER: Any other questions? Thank you.
