SPAIN Casillas – 6: Quick to come off his line this time on two separate occasions. Other than that, he did not have anything else to do. Sergio Ramos – 8: Played almost as an attacking midfielder with a free role and had a hat-trick of chances to score. Didn’t neglect his defensive duties, though, as he was always in position to kill off any Honduran attack. Puyol – 7: Swept up everything that got past Pique. Went up to the other end of the pitch for a few set-piece opportunities, but never got to the end of anything. Pique – 8: Roamed all across the backline to cover, especially for Sergio Ramos, and intercepted everything Honduras could throw at him. Fearless in bringing the ball forward and played a superb cross-field pass to set Villa on his way to the goal. Capdevila – 7: Always provided the overlap in attack down the left wing. Like Ramos, he didn’t have much to do at the back other than a few easy interventions to stop Martinez. Busquets – 7.5: Did well to fill the gaps when his defensive team-mates went surging forward. Also had his moment in the spotlight when he dribbled past three defenders towards goal. Xabi Alonso – 8: Took on the role of the deep-lying playmaker, orchestrating Spain’s attacks with a delightful range of passes and crosses. Did not put a foot wrong as he ran the show. Xavi – 7: Started in an advanced position, playing just behind the forwards. Involved in every Spanish attack, but didn’t look too sure of his role as he opted to pass instead of shoot when he had a clear view of goal. Jesus Navas – 7: Looked too tentative as he rarely took on defenders on the run. His deliveries into the box were also poor. Not as lively as he always is as a super-sub but he was more adventurous in the second half. Torres – 6: Had two glorious chances in the first half but failed to tuck them away. Clearly still rusty in front of goal but showed some great touches on the ball. Villa – 8.5: Terrorised the Honduran defence to no end and even backtracked to recover possession. Fired in a couple of early warning shots before scoring an absolute gem of an opener. Missed a penalty, and had enough chances to nab a hat-trick. Substitutes: Fabregas – 7: Could have scored just seconds into his introduction when he rounded the goalkeeper. Slotted in seamlessly to Xavi’s role. Mata – 7: Threatening down the left, constantly cutting in to the middle. Provided countless openings through the middle. Arbeloa – N/A HONDURAS Valladares – 6: Can’t be held accountable for the two goals. Only had four saves to make in the end, despite Spain rattling off 23 shots in total. Mendoza – 4: Completely run ragged. Simply could not cope with Villa and gave the ball away cheaply on too many occasions. Did make one vital block at the end of the game. Figueroa – 6: Too slow in closing down Villa in the lead up to the goal. Did atone for his mistakes in making a few crucial interceptions to prevent a heavier defeat. Chavez – 6: Like Figueroa, he, too, was slow in closing down Villa for the second goal. He was at least solid in the air. Improved in the second half as he was more compact alongside Figueroa. Izaguirre – 6: Dealt well with Jesus Navas. Blocked a good number of his crosses in the first half but gave away the penalty in the second period. Turcios – 5: As the central attacking midfielder, he failed to provide the link between his defensive midfielders and lone striker David Suazo. Wilson Palacios – 6.5: Had an intriguing battle in midfield but committed too many fouls, although some of them benefited his side as it broke up Spain ’s flowing attacks. Guevara – 5.5: Had to work very hard to close down space in midfield, but was eventually over-run by Spain’s passing brilliance. Espinoza – 5: Provided no threat at all down the left flank even though he had space to run. Pinned back inside his own half for most of the game as he had to help deal with the threat of Sergio Ramos. Walter Martinez – 5: Had good, explosive speed but never could utilise it. Didn’t have the over-lapping support of his team-mates. Suazo – 4: Hardly had a touch of the ball in the first half as he was completely isolated in attack. Ended up with just one shot at goal which he put wide. Substitutes: Welcome – 6.5: Created more openings for his side than anyone else did for Honduras in the first half. Nunez – 6: Had two attempts at goal from distance. Like Welcome, he was more menacing than any of the Honduras starting XI.
