URUGUAY
Muslera – 7 - Managed to get his fingertips to Van Bronckhorst’s strike but
the sheer velocity and perfect accuracy of the hit had him beaten. Unlucky to
concede a second and third. Solid behind everything else the Dutch threw at
him, making a terrific block from Van der Vaart.
M. Pereira – 7 - A very mixed encounter. The right-back was happy to push
on, but equally he was a little sloppy in possession at times, forcing his
side on to the back foot. Grabbed a late, late consolation with a low shot
into the corner. Booked for a first half lunge on Robben.
Godin – 7 - The Dutch rarely posed a serious threat in the air, and that was
in part due to the performance of the Villarreal center-back. Was tested for
pace by Van Persie on occasion, but he was not found wanting due to his
positioning.
Victorino – 6 - Found himself in the team due to the injury to captain Diego
Lugano. Responded calmly, but was a little too relaxed at times, making a
couple of slips due to complacency. Probably the weak link of the Celeste’s
defense.
Caceres – 6.5 - Showed himself to be a solid defender at times but equally
he lost his concentration at other important moments. Made a potentially
goal-saving challenge on Robben in the first half. Booked for a bicycle kick
that caught De Zeeuw straight in the face.
Perez – 6.5 - The Monaco midfielder has built his reputation on being a tidy
if somewhat unspectacular performer. Did his bit in the heart of the Uruguay
midfield, scrapping away efficiently and helping to wrestle the initiative
back for the South Americans after they had lost the first goal. Ultimately
lacked the guile to really worry the Dutch.
Gargano – 6.5 - An anchoring midfielder who is largely defensive in his
outlook, the Celeste started to respond when he, Rios and Perez began to
disrupt the Dutch attacks midway through the first half. Worked hard but his
passing was found wanting at times.
A. Rios – 7 - Covered back well to help his defense regular, sweeping away
most notably when it seemed that Sneijder might sneak in. Didn’t get forward
too often and showed why as he shot hopelessly off target given a rare
glimpse of the target during the second period.
A. Pereira – 5.5 - Struggled to make a major impact down the left but when
he was involved he generally did relatively well. Had a firm strike from
distance saved by Stekelenburg in the first half and also threatened to throw
some dangerous crosses into the box. Didn’t produce enough offensively and
was withdrawn with time running out.
Cavani – 6 - Moved cleverly in tandem with Forlan but lacked the guile from
midfield to truly take advantage of the situation. Couldn’t fashion a chance
himself when the ball was presented to him in a promising position by
Sneijder. Was close to anonymous after the interval.
Forlan – 7 - Scored a wonderful goal to bring the Uruguayans back into the
game at 1-1. Showed great intelligence to drop deep to pick up possession in
the first place and then his technique to create room for a shot to score was
equally impressive. Fed on scraps for the most part and was taken off seven
minutes before time.
Substitutes
Abreu – n/a – Given only 12 minutes in a futile attempt to turn the game.
S. Fernandez – n/a – Played the last 7 minutes as a replacement for Forlan.
NETHERLANDS
Stekelenburg – 5.5 - Will be disappointed with his effort for Forlan’s
goal. Admittedly the ball did move, but a top goalkeeper would have made the
save. Got his body firmly behind everything else that came his way in terms
of shots. Had some difficult back-passes to deal with and was lucky to escape
on occasion.
Boulahrouz – 7.5 - Supported his center-backs well by tucking inside when
required and generally policed Alvaro Pereira well. Got the better of his
individual duel against a tricky opponent who had to be rigorously shackled.
A shot back-pass had Stekelenburg in trouble early in the second half.
Mathijsen – 6.5 - Another Dutchman who will be a little disappointed with
his contribution for the Uruguayan goal. Allowed Forlan too much room to turn
and get his shot away, having been turned inside out in the first place.
Otherwise he was firm and efficient.
Heitinga – 7 - Didn’t take any chances, but that’s not necessarily a bad
thing for a central defender who has been shown to be somewhat limited
technically at times. Ultimately the Everton man had a comfortable game as
the Oranje took a firm grasp on the game after the break.
Van Bronckhorst – 7.5 - Play rarely flowed down the former Barcelona man’s
flank, but it will be his offensive contribution that is remembered in this
game. Scored one of the goals of the tournament with an outrageous attempt
from way out on the left touchline.
Van Bommel – 7 - Was his typically robust self in the center of the
midfield. Exceptionally lucky to escape censure when he committed a nasty
looking high challenge in the first half, though he was booked deep in
stoppage time. Remains an important block in Bert van Marwijk’s system due
to his battling capabilities.
De Zeeuw – 6 - Played only the first half of the game as he was replaced
with the far more creative Van der Vaart at half-time. His distribution was
questionable at times but showed bravery to head clear when a flailing boot
from Caceres caught him in the face.
Robben – 6.5 - Has been brilliant on all the big occasions this season but
struggled to make a big impression on this game. Flitted from the left wing
to the right and back again but struggled to get much change out of his
opponents until he scored a superb header to seal the Oranje’s berth in the
final. Might have added a fourth after a stunning break but finished meekly
before trotting off with seconds to go.
Sneijder – 7 - Early in the match much of the Oranje’s best play flowed
through their star of the tournament to date. Was stifled for a period and
then when he was brought back into play he struggled to find his best rhythm,
giving the ball away an uncharacteristic amount. Scored the decisive goal in
controversial circumstances.
Kuyt – 7 - Rarely does anything especially spectacular but equally has few
poor games. This was a typical Kuyt performance. He showed admirable industry
and the occasional flash of truly refined technique. Found some end product
on 73 minutes, when his cross picked out Robben to head home.
Van Persie – 7 - Not exactly built for a solo role in attack, Van Persie
compensated for his lack of stature by working industriously. When he got
away from one defender, he found himself confronted by another. Did escape
the Uruguayans on a couple of occasions, brilliantly setting up chances for
Robben and Van der Vaart.
Substitutes
Van der Vaart – 7 - Had arguably the best chance of the second half when he
was played in by Van Persie but was thwarted by a smart block. Gifted the
ball away a little too easily immediately after coming on but grew
impressively into the game and controlled matters late on.
Elia – n/a – Given only the last few seconds as a time wasting measure.
