我有一篇勘文也趁現在放上來好了兩年前在課堂引介下第一次讀愛特伍的小說，很喜歡後來無意中發現中譯本有缺譯，就自己私下邊看邊勘英文部分為中文本闕譯處，堪到第二部，後來實在因為耐心用完了就沒再繼續 XD 給喜歡這本書的版友參考補：《盲眼刺客》第一部 002.1 　　……我嘴巴苦澀，整張臉因為痛苦而僵硬，像是剛剛拔過牙。 I was furious with Laura for what she’d done, but also with the policeman for implying that she’d done it. A hot wind was blowing around my head, the strands of my hair lifting and swirling in it, like ink spilled in water. 　　「到時恐怕會有個例行性的查詢。Mrs. Griffen.」他說。 002.2 　　……我看得見她肅穆的淺笑，因驚異而楊起的眉毛，彷彿是讚嘆眼前景色的壯觀。　　The white gloves：a Pontius Pilate gesture. She was washing her hands of me. Of all of us. 　　What has she been thinking of as the car sailed off the bridge, then hung suspended in the afternoon sunlight, glinting like a dragonfly for that one instant of held breath before the plummet？是亞歷斯、理察、bad faith、父親and his wreckage、上帝還是她要命的三角關係？…… 002.3 　　……面紗可以遮住我的眼睛，因為說不定會有記者在場。I would have to call a taxi.另外，我也應該通知辦公室裡的理查，…… 003.4 　　……我意識到自己牙齒打顫，全身冰冷。I must be in shock, I decided. 　　我忽然想到了蕾妮。小時候，每當我們擦傷、割傷或受到任何小傷，為我們擦藥和貼膠帶的人總是蕾妮──媽媽有可能在休息或到了哪裡去做善事，但蕾妮永遠就在左右。她會抱起我們，放在白色的廚桌上， alongside the pie dough she was rolling out or the chicken she was cutting up or the fish she was gutting，給我們一小塊紅糖，作為安撫。…… 005.5 　　……那是一張黑白照，用戰前那種方形而笨重的相機所拍，with their accordion-pleat nozzles and their well-made leather cases that looked like muzzles, with straps and intricate buckles。照片裡是正在野餐的一男一女。…… 005.6 　　他們坐在一棵樹下，可能是蘋果樹，也可能不是；那天她並沒有太注意這棵樹。她身穿白色的女裝襯衫，袖子捲到手肘，寬大的裙子包攏在膝蓋周圍。There must have been a breeze, because of the way the shirt is blowing up against her; or perhaps it wasn’t blowing, perhaps it was clinging; perhaps it was hot. It was hot.她抓住照片的手可以感覺得到熱氣從照片裡源源流出，like the heat from a sun- warmed stone at midnight. 005.7 　　……。他也微笑著──the whiteness of his teeth shows up like a scratched match flaring──but he’s holding up his hand, as if to fend her off in play，就像是要擋開鏡頭，或擋開日後會從這照片審視他的目光。…… 006.8 　　She retrieves the brown envelope when she’s alone, and slides the photo out from among the newspaper clippings，平放在桌上，瞪著它看，彷彿是在諦視一口井或一個水池，彷彿是要穿透自己的倒影，尋找某種掉到裡面去的東西。這東西，雖然已經搆不著，卻仍然看得見，仍然閃閃發光，就像半埋在沙灘上的珠寶。她會端詳照片中的每一個細部：他的手指 bleached by the flash or the sun’s glare、他倆衣服上的皺摺、…… 006.9 　　The trace of blown cloud in the brilliant sky, like ice cream smudged on chrome.他被煙燻黃的手指。遠處的粼粼波光。這一切，全都已經沉沒了。　　沉沒了，卻仍閃著亮光。《盲眼刺客》第二部 007.1 　　妳決定了嗎？他問。妳是要選衣香鬢影的羅曼史，還是荒涼海岸邊的船難？You can have your pick: jungles, tropical islands, mountains. 或者妳也可以選擇外太空，那是我最拿手的。　　外太空？真的假的！　　別嗤笑，那可是個很有用的場景。你喜歡的任何情節，都可以在那裡發生。Spaceships and skin-tight uniforms, ray guns, Martians with bodies of giant squids, that sort of thing. 008.2 　　我不相信。它們只合無聊大眾的胃口。Popular on the covers though ──they’ll writhe all over a fellow, they have to be beaten off with rifle butts. 010.3 　　檸檬汽水、水煮蛋，再加上妳，他說，真是再健康不過的午餐。他把手放在兩手之間搓摩了一下，然後壓迫蛋殼。她注視著他蠕動的嘴、下顎和牙齒。　　Beside me singing in the public park, she says. Here’s the salt for it. 　　Thanks. You remembered everything. 010.4 　　這座石頭堆，分別被五個部落用不同的名字稱呼，The Haunt of Flying Snakes, The Heap of Rubble, The Abode of Howling Mothers, The Door of Oblivion, and The Pit of Gnawed Bones.但有關它的傳說，五個部落卻大同小異。他們說，石頭堆下面埋著一位國王──a king without a name。不只國王，還埋著他統治過的一整座輝煌城市裡的一切。城市在一次戰爭中被毀，國王被俘，吊死在棗椰樹上，as a sign of triumph。他的屍首在一個月夜被取下埋葬，上面堆上石頭，作為標記。…… 011.5 　　城市的名字如今已沒有人知道，都只管它叫石頭堆。征服者刻意把它的名字從人們的記憶中抹去，而他們會在城市的遺址上堆上石頭，用意也在此：那既是一種促進回憶的手段，也是一種促進遺忘的手段。這個地區的人就是喜歡弔詭。五個部落都宣稱自己的祖先就是當年的征服者，對屠城的故事加油添醋，繪聲繪影。五個部落也都相信，屠殺是出於他們神明的意旨，為的是要懲罰該城市的邪惡敗德。邪惡只有鮮血才能洗淨，他們說。屠城那一天，血流成河，也因此，那地方自此以後想必非常聖潔。　　Every herdsman or merchant who passes adds a stone to the heap. It’s an old custom──you do it in remembrance of the dead, your own dead── but since no one knows who the dead under the pile of stones really were, they all leave their stones on the off chance. They’ll get around it by telling you what happened there must have been the will of their god, and thus by leaving a stone they are honouring this will. 　　但也有另外一說，就是這個城市並未真的毀滅。…… 011.6 　　這一切只有國王一個人知道，and it gives him nightmares，其他人則渾然不覺有異。…… 015.7 　　他繼續說：那城市─let's call it by its former name──的名字是薩基諾姆（roughly translatable as The Pearl of Destiny），據說在它還沒有被毀滅以前，是世界的一大奇觀。…… 016.8 　　……。最低一等的「伊格列」是奴隸，他們是可以買賣和隨意處死的。 They were prohibited by law from reading, but had secret codes that they scratched in the dirt with stones。有些「史涅法」還會把奴隸當成牛馬，要他們套上耕具犁田。 016.9 　　八月天，熱得厲害。熱氣有如無形的霧，在空氣中繚繞。Four in the afternoon, the light like melted butter。他們坐在一張公園長凳上，但沒有靠得太近；他們頭上是一棵快曬焦的楓葉，腳下是龜裂的泥土，四周都是枯草。麻雀啄食麵包屑，皺巴巴的報紙隨地可見。Not the best area. A drinking fountain dribbling; three grubby children, a girl in a sunsuit and two boys in shorts, are conspiring beside it. 021.10 　　也不會有持木棒的警察，對不對，她說，笑了一下。The lamplight filters through the leaves; in it, the whites of her eyes gleam。我不該來這兒的，她說。太冒險了。 023.11 　　……。為了殺價，顧客則會嗤之以鼻地加以反駁。明明只織瞎七個，只織瞎十二個，只織瞎十六個。他們會一面撫摸地毯，一面這樣討價還價。It's coarse as a dishcloth. It's nothing but a beggar's blanket. It was made by a gnarr. 025.12 　　這表示他知道她臥室的窗戶在哪兒，也知道那下面有一棵栗樹。他肯定曾在那裡徘徊過，窺視她。她打了個冷顫。　　It's raining, she says. It's going to pour. I'll be waiting. 028.13 　　這條小徑簡直是個溝畦。丟棄的衛生紙、口香糖包裝紙和用過的保險套── like fish bladders──撒滿一地。還有瓶瓶罐罐、碎石子、乾泥巴上一道道車輪痕。她穿錯鞋子了，來這種地方是不應該穿高跟鞋的。他挽著她的手臂，幫她保持平衡。 030.14 　　薩基諾姆人有很多神，God always come in handy, they justify almost everything, and the gods of Sakiel-Norn were no exception。而所有神都是吃葷的，喜歡牲禮，又尤嗜人血。據說，薩基諾姆建城之初，有九位虔誠的父親曾把女兒作為獻祭品，埋在城的九座門下面。　　這九座門有八座位於城牆的四面，每面兩座，一座是進城用，一座是出城用。據說一個人如果打進城的同一座門出城，就會短命。第九座門則位在城市中央的山丘頂上，那是一塊平放的厚大理石板；it opened without moving，據說它也是生與死、人界與神界的分界點。This was the door through which the gods came and went: they didn’t need two doors, because unlike mortals they could be on both sides of a door at once. The prophets of Sakiel-Norn had a saying: What is the real breath of a man──the breathing out or the breathing in?
