我有很多洋人橋牌朋友, 其中與 Bob Lyon 和 Ray Gilbert 的交情最好, 因為年齡
相近又住得近, 不曉得一起參加多少次比賽了. 一月底我在 Indianapolis 下飛機,
他們兩人一起開車來接我; 他們剛打完一項雙人賽, 對一個叫品意見不合而又要我
當他們的法官. 路上我們還計劃著參加哪些最近的比賽, 從 sectional, regional,
講到 national. 前幾天往返幾次 e-mail 之後, Ray 找我在費城 NABC 當他同伴:

昨天正要回信給 Ray, 準備對他說後四天我早就和楊宏宇約好所以不行, 頂多和他
打兩天比賽; 卻發現我不用回信了, 因為我先看到 Bob Lyon 的 e-mail:
Subject: Ray Gilbert
Ray Gilbert, one of my closest friends, was shot and killed at 12:30 this
morning. He was a one of a kind person but he was also one of the nicest
people on this planet. He was my number one bridge partner and a real
ambassador to the game and knew many people in the bridge world. I had
the honor and privilege to have Ray stand up at my wedding in November.
If anyone would like to talk to me about this situation please don't
hesitate to call. My home phone is 3178213126. Also, please tell your
friends, because I don't have everybody's email address.
I will email again to let people know info on the funeral!

當然我馬上打電話給 Bob. 他很難過, 我也很難過. Bob 說他彷彿失去一位親兄弟,
講著講著都快哭了.
一月初在臺大數學系和中山資訊系演講, 我對臺下的聽眾說 "我的一位美國朋友是
security consultant, 他告訴我說他們都相信 1024 bits 以下的 RSA 已經不夠
安全, 至少要用 RSA 1024 才夠 ......" 這位 "美國朋友" 就是指 Ray Gilbert,
他告訴我很多這方面的訊息.
三個月前和 Eric Rodwell 的弟弟 Keith Rodwell 見面. Keith 也打橋牌但是當然
遠不及他的哥哥 Eric. 聽他們的父親 Victor 說 Keith 放棄在 Boston 的工作並
把房子賣掉, 剛回來, 目前沒工作, 不曉得我有沒有管道介紹工作. 我打了個電話
給 Ray Gilbert, 他在 Indianapolis 做了工作市場調查之後回信給我, 我再轉寄
給 Victor 和 Keith, 父子兩人道謝不已.
每次我回臺灣, 都是開車去 Indianapolis, 由 Bob 或 Ray 幫我保管車子並接送我
往返機場. 去年夏天我的車在 Bob 那兒, 他換電話卻沒有跟我講, 我都從臺北飛到
洛杉磯了卻還聯絡不到人來接機. 好不容易打電話找到 Ray, 他說 Bob 在呀, 只是
換電話了. 他馬上打給 Bob, 於是我們開始三方通話. 除了安排好到 Indianapolis
機場接我, 他們還告訴我說他們在剛結束的 Spingold 盃大爆冷門, 第一輪先淘汰
陣容中有波蘭來的世界冠軍 Gawrys-Pszczola 的大種子隊, 第二輪和另一個大種子
Shugart 隊又廝殺得難分難解, 打完六十四牌小輸飲恨. 我聽了很訝異, 怎麼我才
回臺灣三個多月, 以前在比賽中經常挨我罵的 Bob 和 Ray 就突然變得這麼厲害了.
真是士別三日, 刮目相看呀, 以後我要對 Bob 和 Ray 恭恭敬敬客客氣氣的 ......
在 Ray Gilbert 遭槍殺身亡後, 以上往事只能成追憶.
