[新聞] 寵物飼料引發貓隻死亡 - 渴望（Orijen）進口澳洲

我的貓最近因為不明原因癱瘓了 她才11個月大

前後看了兩位獸醫（vet）還有一位專科醫師（specialist）

照過X光 - 脊椎沒有受到壓迫也沒有傷

做了血液分析 - 一切正常

四項病毒感染測試
貓愛滋 (FIV Blood Test)    - 陰性
弓漿蟲 (Toxo-plasma)       - 陰性
Cryptococcus Antigen Titre - 陰性
新包蟲症 (Neospora)        - 陰性

最後還抽了腦脊液 (Cerespinal Fluid ) - 依就找不出原因

現在在吃類固醇(Delta Cortef)和抗生素(Antirobe)
一個禮拜了  情況沒有絲毫改善
本來明天約了複診  說是複診吧  其實也就是要去做最後的決定...


而就在今天一早我收到一封來自我訂貓糧的廠商的e-mail
內容是：
Dear Orijen cat customers, Champion Pet Foods is announcing the voluntary
recall of its ORIJEN brand cat food sold in Australia . Consumers are asked to
stop feeding ORIJEN cat food and return any unused portion to the place of
purchase for a full refund.

親愛的渴望貓糧顧客們  現在我們主動宣布澳洲的產品回收
如果你還留有部份貓糧  請退還給我們  我們將會全額退款

For the full notice, please refer to the attached document. If your cat is
showing any signs of illness, please take to the vet. We recommend contacting
All Natural Vet Care at Russell Lea in Sydney or Small Animal Specialist
Hospital at North Ryde , Sydney as these are the vets working closely with
Champion Pet Foods.

若您的貓有任何不適請儘快就醫  我們推薦在雪梨與本公司合作密切的兩家動物醫院

Cat deaths linked to pet food

UNEXPLAINED chronic illness and death among Sydney cats has been linked to a
gourmet imported pet food withdrawn from stores over the past three weeks.

在過去三個禮拜  連續有貓咪因為連串無法解釋的原因產生疾病甚至死亡
矛頭現指向現已停售的高級進口貓糧

A cat neurologist, Georgina Child, has put down five cats over the past week a
nd treated or consulted with other vets about more than a dozen others
suffering from paralysis.

神經專科醫師Grorgina Child這陣子已經手安樂死五隻貓
並且為另外十多餘隻癱瘓貓進行診療

Dr Child, who is based at the University of Sydney's veterinary hospital and
the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in North Ryde, said the only factor that
linked all the cats was a specialist pet food called Orijen, which is imported
through a Canadian company, Champion Petfoods.

Child醫師表示目前唯一存在於這些貓患的共同點是由Champion Petfoods從加拿大進口的
渴望(Orijen)飼料

"There is a highly suspicious link because this is an uncommon expensive food
n this country at the moment, and not sold in supermarkets," Dr Child said.
"But all tests that have been done so far haven't given us an answer."

此極為不尋常的共同點可以說是個特例  因為在澳洲渴望(Orijen)飼料並不是一般在
超級市場可以買到的貓糧   但至今所有的化驗報告還未能給出一個切確的答案

First symptoms included wobbliness or weakness in the animal's hind legs,
which could then progress to the front limbs. The condition did not appear
be infectious, Dr Child said, nor typical of a nutritional deficiency.

症狀: 走路不平衡  後腿無力  無力感可蔓延至前腳
這些症狀並不是由任何感染源引起  也和一般營養缺乏症無關

"Most worrying is that the cats showed no signs [of illness] while on the food
," she said. "It seems to be happening weeks or even months later."

可怕的是當貓咪在食用此一飼料的期間並不會有任何症狀
症狀表現出來時已經是幾個星期甚至幾個月後

The marketing manager of Champion Petfoods, Peter Muhlenfeld, confirmed
yesterday the cat deaths had been traced back to Orijen's dry cat food, and
the problem appeared to be restricted to Australia.

Champion Petfoods(澳洲進口公司)的銷售經理已經證實多隻貓隻的死亡
原因最終追溯自渴望(Orijen)貓糧  而現在問題只侷限於澳洲境內

He said samples sent back by the Australian distributor had a "strange
odour". The company is investigating whether irradiation upon entry into
Australia was the source of the contamination.

傳回的貓糧樣本有一種奇怪的氣味  現在正在查證進口澳洲的貓糧是否有輻照汙染

The Oddy family of Dundas has lost two cats in the past week.
"They were the children's pets; it's awful," Sarah Oddy said.

可憐的Oddy一家在這次事件失去了兩隻貓咪

看完這篇新聞  我第一個念頭就是太好了

在跑了這麼多間醫院做了這麼多測試都還無解的情況下

我只想知道自己和阿貓到底面對的是什麼

雖然也明白這是不治之症  但至少找到了原因


另外值得慶興的是  目前只有進口澳洲的渴望(Orijen)飼料是有問題的

其他國家像是原產國加拿大  主要市場美國  都沒有傳出災情

台灣也暫時沒有風聲  所以受害的貓並不多
