My parentshad not been out together in quite some time.
One Satuday, as Mom was finishing the dinner dishes, my
father stepped up behind her."Would you like to go out,
girl?" he asked. Not even turning around, my mother
quickly replied,"Oh.yes, I'd I love to!" They had a
wonderful evening, and it wasn't until the end of it
that Dad confessed.His question had actually been
directed to the family dog, lying near Mom's feet on the
kitchen floor.
The great Yankee Hitter Roger Maris was unusally calm
on the baseball field. His former teammatr Tony Kubek
remembered:We were playing in Detroite, I was on second
base, and Roger was at the plate. Suddenly he stepped out
of the batter's box seemed to be staring at the upper deck
in right field. Aflock of about 250 Canada geese appered
on the horizon. Roger took off his cap and just watched
the geese. It couldn't have been more than a minute, but
it seemed like ten befor he got back into the batter's box.
Finally he was ready to hit, just under where the geese
had flown. The last time I talked to Roger was two months
before hd died."Tony,"he said,"I can still see thoses
geese."Watching them was so beautiful."
