繪本作家──李歐‧李奧尼
李歐.李奧尼，1910年出生於荷蘭.阿姆斯特丹，1999年10月過世，享年89歲。父親是
比利時的猶太商人，母親是荷籍的女高音，李奧是獨子，從小就和藝術氣息濃厚的母親
這邊的家族來往較密。由於父親工作的關係，他十三歲時離開了童年故鄉，在美國小
住過三年，1925年又遷居到義大利，在傑諾瓦（Genoa）求學，一直到修完經濟學博士，
結婚後，才轉到米蘭工作。1939年，因法西斯主義盛行，歐洲興起反猶太的浪潮，
在納粹侵犯的前夕舉家走避美國，1945年入籍美國，成為美國公民。
李歐在美國費城找到廣告代理商，得到藝術總監助理的職位，他的天份與才華因此
被發掘，在美國的設計界大放異彩。1959年首作繪本－《little blue and little
yellow》 （小藍和小黃，台英出版）誕生。雖然以49歲之年開始創作繪本，但其後，
則陸續創作了三十多本繪本。其作品不僅膾炙人口，也紛紛贏得各種獎項，可以說是
一位當代頗為重要的繪本作家。
李歐.李奧尼所有作品，都是由他自寫自畫完成。這是他重視文與圖的緊密結合，
為了避免在創作過程中必須有所妥協，所以，他始終堅持獨力作業的原則。另外，
他也曾經說過，在創作繪本時，他並不在意讀者的年齡層。他認為一本好的兒童讀物
應該能引起所有尚未喪失赤子之心的人的共鳴。他說：「我真的不全然是為孩子創作的。
我做這些書，是為了我自己和我的朋友們心裡面恆常不變，仍然是孩子的那個部份而
做的。」
李歐在藝術的領域中堪稱十項全能：繪畫、雕刻、平面設計、攝影、陶藝、兒童書
製作…樣樣精通。所以我們可說他是畫家、作家、講師、雕刻家、評論家、平面廣告
設計家、藝術指導…….。不過在諸多才能中，最為人稱道的是他的平面設計和兒童繪本。
李歐創作繪本的機緣是一趟不經意的火車之旅；49歲那年，有一天從New York要
帶著兩個孫子回康州、格林威治鎮。在火車上他試過各種方法都無法讓孩子安靜的坐在
椅子上，靈機一動從《Life》雜誌上順手撕下幾片有顏色的紙片，編了一個故事。一個
圓形藍色塊和一個圓形黃色塊，他們倆是好朋友，當他們擁抱就變成了綠。他沒想到
這個故事讓兩個好動的孫子安安靜靜的坐回家，講完快樂圓滿的結局，孩子又央求一遍
一遍的講著。回到家李歐畫出初稿，隔天他的朋友、一位童書的編輯到他家吃晚餐看到了
《小藍和小黃》就決定出版這一本書。
李歐他曾表示，眾多繪本中，他個人最喜歡《田鼠阿佛》，因為阿佛就是兒時的他，
總是不太在意別人眼中重要的事，而整天坐在一旁靜靜的冥想、做白日夢、獨享一些
心靈的美好。他為了給和他一樣愛思考的孩子一點心有戚戚焉的認同感，他帶著一點點
自傳的意味，寫下《田鼠阿佛》。
