如果是你根本不喜歡這個學校而「不想申請」，那就不要申請:)
我個人是這樣認為：申請學校這種事沒有什麼絕對或絕對不的事
去年聽到一些人申請的家數只有三到四家 個人是覺得相當不好
一方面是有全軍覆沒的危險
二方面則是很多的選擇不是在申請過程的前端就會立即確定的
等結果出來 你考慮的因素可能會加進：「有無獎學金」
在看了週遭一些朋友後 我發現這是一個相當決定性的因素
許多人可能會在最後選了一家有給錢的學校而捨棄排行前幾名的學校
像凸凸在後來再加進申請 Princeton 結果他最後選了這家!
再舉我的例子:) 我一開始到今年二月初時學校方面開始有回應時
我都覺得自己不會上 Stanford，我相信別人看我也是一樣:P
但是申請學校的這種事情很難講 成績好、背景好的人不一定會上到前幾志願
一些客觀條件不好的人申請好學校也也不是全然無希望
所以對於那些「申請了不也會上的學校」 我建議還是要去申請
人總是要相信奇蹟是存在的吧:)

我的想法是：如果能線上申請的，就線上申請。
因為線上申請的話好處目前我想到的有：
1．可信用卡刷卡付申請費，省下郵寄匯票的麻煩
2．若是作 paper-based 的表格，還要手寫或打字，麻煩!
當初我線上申請的有：Stanford、UCB、UCLA、UMCP、UT、UWisconsin、UIUC
用 paper-based 的有：UMich、Cornell、Purdue、CMU

就像黑柱講的，不想申請的就不要申請，但是其實所謂的不想
應該也只是程度上的差別吧！所以囉，大概申請個十到十二家
一開始先選個15家左右，最後再將這十五家中比較不想申請的
刪掉，所以囉，就是先閉著眼睛將所有有聽過的，有一滴滴興
趣的學校都全部列出來，然後再去找找相關的資料，等到該確
定時再以刪去法來做選擇！這樣子就應該不會有你所說的困擾
囉！

我有聽說親自到當地學校跟教授約時間interview會比較有機會
我因為丟完申請表也想先去美國走走
如果有用可以找幾個意願較高的學校
不曉得各位有聽說嗎

Of course you should find what's the school's major area.
(The way I determine whether it is a major area is by
seeing whether it is popular through out the whole department,
and is there any center found specially for that purpose.)
To some bodies, location is also an important factor. Do they
have direct Ph.D. program? How's the weather? The reputation you
know. I even know that some people really care about whether the
campus is beautiful or not. What's the factor needed to be considered
it totally up to you.

I have just find another way to handle this case with I-Liang.
In your application form, you could say that you will take the Toefl
exam in early December. So the grade will not be available so soon.
The only thing you need to tell them is the EXPECTED grade. Since you
have already taken the TOEFL test, just tell them the previous one's
grade. It is of course a reliable estimation, so they surely will
trust you and treat you just as the normal guys.
After passing the first elimination, your application will be reviewed
by the comittiee, which mainly comprises all professors. After you
have approved by any one of the professor, the late coming TOEFL
is not as important as before. Do you understand what I am talking?

It will surely help a lot if there is any chance to have an
interview with the guys in U.S. The only problem is that most
people do not have free time and money to be in U.S. The second
is that you should better arrange the interview in Taiwan, which
can ensure you will not waste your time and money in vain.
To have a talk with the professors, remember to be aggressive.
I always hear that it cannot be too aggressive for a Chinese(Taiwan)
student.

如果要申請博士班、獎學金 可嘗試連絡看看的話 這樣做可能有幫助
先寫個 email 過去探探路 問他幾個問題 說不定他覺得你大有可為
而願意和你見面 而一般碩士班只是修課 不會跟教授做事
所以去找教授的話 對於申請的結果不一定有幫助
系上通常會成立一個 committee 來審核並決定錄取名單
你不知道哪個教授會在其中 不是 committee 的教授你去找他也是枉然
反正你要去美國玩 順道過去也可

: 時間上恐怕不太來得及吧？明年四月才退耶...
強烈建議用 email 既省時有省錢
反正要約 interview 也要先 email
