Subject: [themirror] Re: Is Dream Theater Backing Off?
hey, i would deffinately agree with you about DT going too commercial in
fif, but if we look at the history of all such big musicians they all
went commercial after a few years but that was after when they had
nothing to prove, DT has reached that stage quite earlier, i would only
regard I&W and awake as true progressive stuff and some of COS aswell
but the rest doesnt prove their capabilities, i guess they have to
through a few more albums before they go commercial cause they have alot
to prove, and the biggest reason behind that is, due to their technical
supiriority fans expect alot from them and have quite high hopes which
they have let down in fif, the new album will tell us whether to look
for a new band or not cause if the new album is like fif, then they have
gone too commercial and most of their fans will be disappointed, anyway
take care...

Umm, then exactly what are we *supposed* to argue? Facts?
"John Petrucci plays guitar for Dream Theater."
"No he doesn't!"
"YES HE DOES!!"
"Oh."
That would make for some boring discussion. You *have* to
discuss opinions, because facts are FACTS. I don't need someone
to *tell* me that something is their opinion, I can usually safely
assume that it is (even if they state otherwise).

I think it makes for great musical tension, lyrically speaking. And
I'd suspect that we're going to see less and less of it in DT's music.
Speaking from experience, once you have kid(s), the mysteries of
life and religion start to make a whole lot more sense. Plus, it gives
you a whole lot less time to think about them. :-)
> 2. DT is not selling out.
Strictly speaking, yes - they are. They "sold out" as soon as they
signed the deal to record WDADU. Tool has it right - every signed
band "sells out", so the term really has no meaning.
> 3. "Derek/Kevin (Shirley) killed DT"
I agree. FII has been out for well over a year now, and I have yet to
see a statement from any member of the band that they were
disappointed in how FII turned out. So, I have to assume that they
were relatively pleased with the result. Some people may choose
to disagree - but I'm not one of them. I'm one of the people that
thought (and still thinks) that FII is the best album DT has ever
made.
> 4. Stop comparing DT to Alternica.
I won't disuss it here, because I don't think it belongs on this list,
but I think this rant is WAY out of line.
