I agree that it's only worthwhile (and interesting) to argue opinions,
as opposed to facts. It goes without saying that people will disagree,
but as long as we're civil to each other and don't get into name-calling
and other silliness, I think it's very healthy to debate DT issues
(heck, that's what ideas are for right? To be shared, critiqued,
tested...)
Regarding the latest comment on religion, it was said that DT will
probably write less about it than they used to since having families
will take away a lot of it's mystery (answer questions) and give them
less time to think about it. Personally, I disagree. I think having a
family would only re-inforce many existential questions and even bring
up new ones (related to ou meaning, purpose in the world, etc). Also, I
really don't think that family life will cause DT to start thinking
less. Let's give them some credit here. They're intelligent, reflective
guys.

That would be because MOST record stores want to keep the OFFICIAL
date.....I got mine in last weekend... The store doesn't care about going by
the books, so if you find a store that would be willing to sell you stuff
before the OFFICIAL release date I guess that would be better...then you can
shove it your friends face! Kidding....

what i'm saying is you're not supposed to ARGUE opinion. what i meant
was that we should STATE our opinions, and possibly demonstrate why we
feel that way. i was protesting the fact that people were forcing
their opinions on others. please, don't get me wrong-- i'd love to
hear everyone's opinions (especially yours), but only when they aren't
forced upon me.
>That would make for some boring discussion. You *have* to
>discuss opinions, because facts are FACTS. I don't need someone
see, i want people to DISCUSS opinions, but not ARGUE them. it might
seem like a fine line, but it's really not. give all the opinions you
want, but don't say somebody else's is wrong.
>to *tell* me that something is their opinion, I can usually safely
>assume that it is (even if they state otherwise).
the problem i have with that is like the old adage "it's the thought
that counts." If someone tells me their opinion, i don't mind. but if
someone says their opinion IS RIGHT, i have a problem with that.

ok, i know my Tool. but not everybody here does, so i'm using the
common definition, "to be concerned only about money." so what i meant
was: I respect the opinions of you OGDTs, but I don't feel that money
is DT's master.
>> 4. Stop comparing DT to Alternica.
>
>I won't disuss it here, because I don't think it belongs on this
list,
>but I think this rant is WAY out of line.
fair enough. it was merely an opinion-- brought up in response to what
I saw on the list. but you're right, and I should mention that i never
intended to elaborate on it ON the list.
let me just simplify my main point (not directed at you, Pat): this IS
a place for opinions, but please allow everyone to have their own.

On this line, OIALT was on the shelves in a store near me, so i
picked it up, even though i was fairly sure the release date had not
been yet reached.
On a Whole, i disapprove of stores that sell an album out ahead of
the ship date, the record industry as a whole agreed on the" Release
date " standard for quite a few reasons, only one of which was to be
fair to all the many many record stores out there who were crying" My
profits are getting cut into because they released it first", which
is true, but the album was there, DT rocks, so i grabbed it.. but
that don't mean i condone it.
So what do we say? are universal release dates a good or bad thing
peeps?
(i personally have no desire to shove an album in my friends face
just to say" HAHA, i got it before you", I'd like to think i'm a bit
more mature than that! ;)

Subject: [themirror] Internet Message
Commercial? Please explain this to me... is it a bad thing that DT is
selling albums and making money?!? Or would we all rather prefer that
they made their albums, but no money, and made their music purely for
our, the fans' sakes? please...
This hits the "selling out thread" as well... My word, DT is actually
making money doing what they love to do... the bastards!
And all this time, i thought the point of life was to make good money
and a comfortable living doing something you actually ~enjoy!~
None of the members of DT are rich, by any definition of the standard
at all, the mortgages get paid, the kids get fed, and ~gasp~ they
have to live a life just like the rest of us.
Please, lets give this a break already... I'm glad DT is doing great,,
i have been shoving their music for years into peoples hands hoping
other would love it too, and buy their albums..get it yet?... hmmm,
they make more money, they make more albums,, they call more of the
shots... and it gets done their way! which is what we are all crying
for... So lets bully up and continue to support our favorite band by
exposing others to their music and supporting them ourselves ,
otherwise... we'll all be listening to HANSON 24/7 (scary thought ehh?
)

Subject: [themirror] Re: Is Dream Theater Backing Off?
In my opinion...
FII is the best collective work of art produced by any artist in any medium.
That includes Dream Theater and their before stuff. Why is technique so
important? I think that time signatures mean absolutely nothing. Yes, even
songs in 4/4 time signature are good. Besides, the FII technique isn't
extremely easy, either. How many of us can jam like John P? And even if you
can, technique is not all that consequential. Music is about emotion. For
example, Chopin's Nocturne (can't remeber the no.) is technically very
unchallenging, but absolutely (I think) the most beautiful melody he's ever
written.
And I know this is sad, but wouldn't DT be a little more commercially
successful if they did commercialize themselves? I'm not posted on record
sales or anything, but I do know that the airplay they get is slim to none;
and when I do hear them, it's usually after I've requested the song myself.
But more often than not, the DJs think that I'm plum loco when I do.

Subject: [themirror] Re: Internet Message
i don't think the issue is if Dream Theater is accepted by the public or
not.. it's wheather or not they jeporadize musical integrity to make a
buck.. that's the argument of DT selling out... i'm not concerned cause
i think they're still making beautiful music.. i'm just pissed about
Derek joining the band.. i read some interview's with him and he comes
of like a complete pric.. maybe reading an interview gives the wrong
impression of how he really is, but it's kinda hard to think that when
he says stuff like how Dream Theater was no good till he came along..
Plus Jens Johanson, who's far superior to derek technically, audition
but for some wacky reason they went with Derek instead.. i have no idea
what they were thinking.. and i think derek (along with the production
company) had a lot to do with FII turning out the way it did.. i still
love the songs and the lyrics are beautiful but it lost it's progressive
edge and it's technical intricacies... still great stuff though.. and
"once in a LIVEtime" is awesome.. i can't wait till their next one... i
just pray derek will be gone by that time (knock on wood)..

Subject: [themirror] Re: Is Dream Theater Backing Off?
Hi everybody at "The Mirror"
For the last couple of days I've been reading a lot about DT backing off...
I'm sorry to say; but what kind of bulls... is that !
I must say that I don't agree at all... - If you guys all listen to FII, and
then try to play it, you'll be amased !!!
Songs like "Lines In The Sand" + "Trial of Tears" are really
difficult... especially the guitar parts (JP rules!!!)...
The issue is in my opinion not relevant at all - DT has every right to
just make their songs -
the fans (us) can go ahead and critisize as much as they desire, but in the
end we can't make DT write songa like the ones on the albums IAW + Awake,
the band has developed just like the rest of us.
The essnce of this letter is probably that you should back off -
instread of acusing the band of backing off...
Yours truely...

I was speaking more from my own personal experience. My first
wedding anniversary was this past weekend, and I have a daughter
who is almost 2, and she has "opened my eyes" to the esoterics of
the world more than anything else ever has. In a way, she makes
all the "angst" of my younger years seem much less important,
almost pointless.
I'm not saying it would affect everyone that way, just that it could -
because that's how it affected me.
I never said they were going to stop thinking, only that the religious
topics might become less prevalent. DT without thoughful (and
thought-provoking) lyrics wouldn't *be* DT.

Subject: [themirror] Once In A Live Time!
Holy Shit!!! I just got Once In A Live Time and I THINK it is awesome!!!
It is well worth the 23 dollars I gave.
That is the first thing that I want to say. The second is that I THINK that
FIF is great in it's own right. There was an argument that FIF has three
commercial songs, I would guess it was pertaining to Hollow Years, Take Away
My Pain, and Anna Lee. Last time I checked there were songs in that vein on
I&W. i.e. Another Day, Surrounded, and Wait For Sleep. Then on Awake you
have Space-Dye Vest, as if anyone didn't know. If they went commercial on
FIF, they would play their stuff on the radio and not Back Street Boys or
the Goo Goo Dolls.
I&W is different from WDADU, Awake form I&W, Seasons from Awake, FIF from
Seasons and what may come would be different from FIF. If all their albums
were like I&W, it would get boring after the first one or two listens.
Bottom line is FIF is a great album and just because some people think that
they sold out or whatever the case is, doesn't mean that it is not a good
album.
(All this is MY OPINION (just thought I would state that :) ) )
