Subject: [themirror] Re: Recordings?
Some or most bootleggers trade their tapes with other bootleggers. I
personally don't have any but would like to start collecting them. I just love
DT and the more I have the happier I am. I would never try to make a profit
off of DT and I always buy the cds and vids that their label puts out.
Just another point of view,

Subject: [themirror] Re: James' voice live
Hmm...nobody else messes up just James.
The vocal chords are a delicate insturment not to be taken lightly. The
voice usually deteriorates over the years. Some people can sing wrong for
years i.e Sammy Hagar 30+ yrs. Alice Cooper 30+yrs. Some people can't i.e
Steve Walsh (Kansas) his voice is fried. But please don't rip James because of
this. Sure the rest of DT can play flawlessly thats because they can build
strength in their fingers arms and legs. The voice can only attain so much
strength. It's not just a case of getting used to it. A good analogy would be:
how does your throat feel after screaming and yelling after a concert? I know
I can hardly speak after a DT show and I'm sure James can't either. I think
James does an excelent job live he puts forth alot of raw emotion and really
puts his heart into the music which any good singer does.
If you don't like the way James sounds live then maybe you shouldn't buy
the live stuff. Not a flame just a suggestion.
Until next time,
Juli

I have to agree. I personally own several bootlegs of greater quality than
OIAL. Not to say that OIAL is bad....but I was a little disappointed with
the quality....especially with "Voices" which is horrible.

Subject: [themirror] Re: Recordings?
If you look even closer at IAW you will notice that there's approximately 15
minutes or so of unused space. The version that they did record for IAW (on
the Antiquities CD :) ) runs about 17 minutes. You maybe right in more ways
than you think, the song might not fit well (I don't think it doesn't fit
after hearing the studio version of ACOS from IAW, it sounds very IAW-ish),
but it also won't fit, time wise, on the CD.
Every single time DT plays, (in the studio or live) Mike Portnoy bootlegs
the performance and some of the better bootlegs out there are the recordings
that he made. Mike supplied allot of the material that went into the making
of ALL of the Mike Bahr CD's. The way I see it, DT is only helping the
production and continuation of bootlegs. IMHO DT is directly responsible for
the things you like the least (bootlegs) about our beloved band.

He's not entirely my favorite, either. However, I'm pretty sure there
are a couple of spots Derek missed, too. Check out Take the Time...I
don't think he's all together there. But, as a keyboardist myself, the
fact that it's the ONLY mistake I seem to find is pretty damn good. I
don't have any problems with James' concert voice on this album...it's
live, and I want it to SOUND live. Then again, hence the Subject
above...OPINIONS. ;-D

Subject: [themirror] Re: Opinions !?!
In my opinion.... I think this is the best thing the band could have done!!! I
think the CD is absolutely GGGRRREEEEAAAAATTTTT!!!!!!!!!! I thought I was
still at the concert. To me any true D.T. fan would agree! How can anyone in
there sober mind think that a band would play and sound exactly as the CD
sounds!!! That's impossible, and I personally wouldn't want them to!!!!!! I
really love the sax on T.A.M.P. that was just outstanding!!!!!!!! To me that
was very artistic!!!! I have one quick question for anyone..... Why doesn't
Mr. Myung ever play a solo????? Even when I saw them this year he didn't.

Subject: [themirror] Re: Recordings?
Here's the thing....your right, DT does not get any money out of bootlegs
(nor do most people that trade instead of buy or sell), but it drums up
interest. I own every DT CD that's ever been put out (as I'm sure all of you
do) and will always buy new ones as they come out. But when I have to wait 2
or 3 years for new material, I don't wanna wait that long (and wouldn't have
to if the f***ing record companies would get their head out of their ass),
so I turn to bootlegs. If the record companies would release more material
in a more timely fashion, the bootleg business wouldn't be as active,
although I have to admit that I do own some shows that I like better than
some official releases. Just my 2 cents worth.

I don愒 know if he underestimates the popularity of bass players these days or
he's just humble. I'm personally a guitar (not bass) player so I'm not
technically knowledged when it comes to bass playing but I can say this, I saw
Stu Hamm solo on the G3 tour with Satch and Vai and I realized that day how
much "music power" the bass has, the mixture of styles (hammering to country)
was absolutely incredible, one of the most memorable moments of the evening.
I'm looking forward to hearing Myung solo, hopefully for their next tour.
- OIAL - excellent bass playing, you can really hear the bass on this album.
Just my 2 cents, peace
Luis

Well, yes, of course the band is directly responsible for the
bootlegs,, no bands,, no bootlegs of the bands,,, tada!
But, i reiterate once more,, i prefer the higher quaility studio
recordings that i plop my bucks down for, instead of the lower
quailty, twice as high priced bootlegs..

Truth is truth,, we all love DT to death, otherwise we wouldn't be
here on this fanzine Bs's about this stuff, but alas,, St is
unfortuantly NOT a huge draw fro the record company..... its up to us,
the paying fans to spread thier sound, and give them the revenue
they need to bring us bigger and better shows..

Subject: [themirror] Re: Opinions !?!
I had the same experience when I saw DT in person. James sounded fantastic
live.
My beef is that you'd think that with all of the concerts that DT has
performed, that they'd pick one of James's good nights.

Subject: [themirror] Re: Opinions !?!
Hmmm...don't you think that someone like Ray Alder or Geoff Tate could take DT
to an even higher level? As much as I love the band, I have long felt that
the vocals are the weakest spot....

studio material other than what's on the albums but don't know where to find
it...any suggestions on where to look?????

Subject: [themirror] Status Seeker.....
Dear all,
In the car today I was listening to the 1st album. Not IAW, but WDADU.
I noticed people have been saying that DT has become too "radio
friendly".
The only reason you all say that is become you are comparing it to
previous works. Status Seeker is an extremely radio friendly pop song,
but did people complain about it, of course not, they weren't comparing
it to anything else.
We could be in a worse situation. I was reading an interview with Lars
Ulrich, and he was talking about how at their Atlanta show everyone was
singing along to Enter Sandman, Unforgiven II, and all the other new
songs. He said when they started Fight Fire with Fire, half of the crowd
had this shocked looked on their face. Let's be grateful radio and MTV
HASN'T embraced DT, and thousands of teeny bopper aren't listening to
Hollow Years over and over again like my 12 year old sister whose fav
bands are Matchbox 20 and EVE 6. Something to think about. We have our
own deal going here.
Peace,
Kurt

You didn't even read my response, did you? I'll go a little slower
for you
this time...
Dream Theater has been known to supply material for the bootleg
companies.
In turn, that material is transformed into bootlegs. Dream Theater
is
responsible for the production of the bootlegs by releasing the DAT's
that
THEY record on stage. Do you get it now?
>But, I reiterate once more,, I prefer the higher quality studio

Either you have heard some really badly recorded stuff or just have a
really
bad stereo system. Boots like "Dance of Eternity", "Lost in the Sky"
and
"Wake Up" sound like they are produced better than OIALT or even FII.
Granted, if you have a cheesy boom box as a source player, it's going
to
sound bad.
Also, I paid less for a single 2 disc boot than I did for OIALT which
I got
it through CDnow with a $5 discount. So I don't know where you're
seeing
high priced boots from.
You should check out other boots before you start making assumptions
about
ALL boots.

I think i am a fairly intelligent person, don't worry, i can keep
pace with your" intricate dialect", so don't slow down on my account.
I didn't say I was making ANY assumptions about anything. If it is
true that DT themselves are freely releasing the material, then that
is fine, and I would consider it a very unselfish thing of them to do.
But yes, look around, most bootlegs( IE, definition or this word:
Illegally made copies of copyrighted performance or entertainment
media, usually of a very low quality, intended to defraud upon
copyrighted material for capital gain.--look it up) are VERY poor
quality, and ARE illegal, and are very expensive too.
If DT is giving the material away, then it is called" Public domain"
and the only legal requirement for such material is that credit be
given to the original Artist, or creator of the work.
And thank you for the unneeded concern for my stereo, it works just
fine.

WOAH!!
Now I think ppl r stepping over the line. Fair enough, you have your own
opinion, but KJLB is an awesome singer and there couldn't possibly
another person that could possibly fill his spot. A few croaks here and
there, all the more enjoyment to listen his mistakes and go WOW, I'm one
of very few people in the world to here James stuff up. Be proud of the
fact. And yes, the others do stuff up, quite a lot actually, JP
included. No-ones perfect buddy.
All for now,
